I would suggest not using caps for your name on the second panel, using all lowercase on the urls instead of random capitalization and lowercase for the url in the third panel as well.

    Beautiful design, I like it.

    Design something

Posted on Dec 13, 2009 at 4:05 AM

On first look it blends in a little too much with the rest of the big headlined, wooden background, transparency websites out there. In short it looks a little too cookie cutter.

The background isn't seamless, the image of main focus bleeds through the transparency on the right and it just looks like you didn't put much thought into it.

I'm sorry if I'm being harsh, but if you're going to promote your work in design, it should be represented with a little more "design".

Liked the pattern you had before, it was just the blue didn't compliment it very well. Other than that it looks pretty good.

    Navigation

Posted on Nov 18, 2009 at 4:09 PM

First the top seems too muted and the bottom seems to loud, I think if you combine elements of the two and work in some of the blue you've got a winner. I like the two different background images on each side in the bottom image also.

The main site navigation needs some clarification like the bottom image to make it stand out, and I'm not too sure about the black horizontal bars. Try integrating the links and login into the rest of the page maybe?

Aside from that, the changes you made are awesome.

For a tech news site, it doesn't seem very tech oriented, attractive or aesthetic. It's plain and drab and not very engaging to the eyes.

I would suggest browsing some of the css galleries like Miro suggested and give a Photoshop concept a try instead of Flash, there are so many more tools and options available to make your concept look great.

    Portfolio content

    Hey Shane,

I like the site, colorful with a large background yet the content shines through and blends at the same time. Great typography with ample white-space and I'm digging the watercolor background.

The only suggestions I have is the portfolio content that I can see (design and photography) seems to be more broken up into sections on the page in relation to the rest of the site.

While the site is very colorful it seems a little too blue for my taste, breaking it up with some other colors might change my opinion, but then again it's just my opinion.

i agree about the Blues, im hoping that once I actually have some content up there that those colors will make a difference and break things up a bit color wise. . .

those are actually service pages - whereas I was going to have a page dedicated purely to the portfolio. My reasoning behind it is to provide potential/existing clients with an overview of the services we offer and the benefits they can receive from them. then those images would link to a main portfolio. . .

im having difficulty seeing whether or not that is user friendly or not. I don't really like thumbnails - and would much rather have nearly full-sized images on the portfolio. . .

thanks for your comments - im open to more ;-) and I really do love critique ;-) any other thoughts on the portfolio?

I guess I would start by putting the examples on one page and breaking it up into sections using white-space and headings. Have an accordion type system showing more content of that section and hiding the rest with tabs or a link?

My reasoning behind this is to encourage interactivity and get potential clients to browse your portfolio instead of skimming it.

i like the idea of using javascript/accordion to add some interactivity to the examples - thats a great idea!

ill cook up a portfolio page soon and post it!

      thanks for your thoughts Jason!

I'm not seeing clean or elegant. Items are out of proportion and does not blend well together.

    Background

The left section background color with a drop shadow from the header add too much separation to the content below it. The large logo seems misplaced as well as the content not flowing together.

Nice, only thing i would change is maybe title what the user is reading when they scroll to it.

    Otherwise, looks great!
