I like it, it's consistent and fits together. The banner which says "we are obsessed/love sports" is the strongest thing here, because it's funny, bold and well designed. But I understand that the thing below (a little bit wider than the rest) is the calendar link where people should click to check it out? So I would make it maybe even more prominent, but with less text. For example, give it a red background and leave only "1st Comprehensive calendar of Action Sport Events", which would be aligned to the arrows. And nothing else in this banner. You can write descriptions in the box next to the video, or even below it. I would remove any other unnecessary texts/buttons/links. Simple things work better :)

Steven diebold commented:I think there is some pattern here with your issue.
You are focusing on design and not hitting the key points of what is this thing and how can I use it.
Its just not clear enough. If you follow what I gave you and just try it see what people say. You need to give us CONTEXT so we know if this thing is for us or not. I'm a brand strategist and I would be your customer and I have no idea what this thing is in all honesty.
I thought it was a sports calendar of events for sports people.
here are some examples of clear value proposition sites: http://99designs.com/ http://www.mediafire.com
Notice the themes here. The designs are not overpowering the communication and value proposition. I know in 3 secs if this is for me or not.
Get away from that banner thing. Its not helping. Design for the audience its intended for. Brand people like me could care less about that banner thing you have and if its cute or snazzy or whatever. We want to know what the heck it is and how I can benefit from it and why I should bother.
What is the VALUE here. Focus design around VALUE not DESIGN for design sake to make it pretty. You are not marketing to designers. Brand people are advertisers and if you have an unclear message we go nuts and get upset cause we deal with that in our jobs. Make it clear what you are selling and you will win us over. what are the key points to this thing and what I can do with it and why I should even care to hit the search bar?
I can tell you now that banner is just killing your focus. Why focus on that? What value does it give me to understand your value to me with a sports calendar? if you are offering the EVENTBRITE of SPORTS events than be that and make it clear and make it quick.
don't give me a bunch of directions or try to tell me in your comments where stuff is at. If I cannot find it without your explanations then that is the problem.

Espree Devora commented:Totally agree with everything you are saying. It should all be auto intuitive. I am a big fan of Jason Fried and did look at http://basecamphq.com/ templates to get this far with my visual communication. I will think about your notes and continue to work on it. Much appreciation. thanks for being blunt and direct about it all. That's the only way to improve. Will keep you posted.

You mean the sports? Those weren't intended to be clickable, Hmmm. You think they should be?
