I think this concept is a bit too busy. I commend you on thinking out of the box and coming up with something creative. I don't think the logo is working for me in the middle like that. I'm also not sure about including the kid art, front and center like that (Not sure if they wanted you to do that or not). The layout of the navigation and the the links on the right look like two different navigation bars. I would try and downplay the right links. Just my thoughts here, you obviously have are a creative person but I think this site might be a little too creative, if that makes sense.

In fact, the rainbow, placing the logo in the middle, and including the vectors/illustrations in the footer were what they wanted. I tried my best to satisfy their needs and create something I like. Apparently, I have a long way to go.
Regarding the links on the right hand side, you're right. They are too obvious.
