The design successfully portrays elegance. I like the pattern in the header and the color. The photo is very striking.
Part of me wants the links to line up more obviously with the elements in the center box, but I don't think this is a big issue. Everything is centered and that keeps it all together. There is enough white space to let everything breath.
I agree that the text is hard to read against the transparent background.
