I'm not fond of the background as well, but that's just me. I agree with the previous poster that the ball should be in the middle. Have you tried a light blue color...or a light mint green color or is that just too cliche?
I wonder how it'd translate in print. Let me know what you find out on how it looks on paper.

Why people don't like brown???? ;) Thanks for the feedback, not blue and not green will work to me, too much used for applications, and I want to give it a groundy/earthy look. The position of the icon has been tought, in the middle the logo will be too static and I want a little bit of dynamism on it. Printing won't be a problem at all, probably a little bit expensive but that's is not an issue. The logo was built in cmyk working profile for printing, and software boxes and users' manual usually use glossy paper, but just in case I have done a black and white version aswell.
