    The concept is good. I can't really attest to its originality though. I'm almost certain that I've heard of something either like this or with the exact same concept.

    The overall design needs to be considered more carefully, in theory, before you actually start rendering site elements. You should get some graph paper and come up with at least 2-3 mock ups of something you can be happy with (or at least not hate). When you start to render a draft, hopefully you're using Photoshop or Gimp for this, than use a gray-scale color combination. When you finished making things look "tidy" than will be a good time to work out colors.

    It's all about going with a natural flow. Have fun!
