I know this is your first attempt here, but I have to be honest and say the illustration isn't at it's best. The shapes look pretty simple, yet you are using complex gradients and shadows. If you want to go for a very simple look, don't use gradients. Also, the red on the charcoal is extremely hard to read. Sorry to tear this apart, just wanting to be honest.

No no, thats good. The goal here is to convey a message. Very much in the spirit of things like http://xkcd.com/, I just don't want the image to distract from its purpose which it seems to be doing, or you guys just will always want beautiful pictures. The image will always be rough, I want it to get better, but it's going to remain clumsy. I just want it to have a balance of clumsy and useful. I'm posting an updated design to remove the distraction of the gradient and the red on charcoal.

i understand your point here with having the illustration be secondary to the message. However, if you want to do that, do that with simple line shapes, hand drawn objects. Making the 3d with color will always make them stand out more the message.

Right, that's why I took out the gradients like you said and added hand drawn looking buildings. Or you still not digging that?

Yeah, honestly still not diggin' it. These are great examples of what you are trying to do:

Agreed that maybe doing actual pen sketches and scanning that is a better approach for the medium. Vector illustrations can be somewhat unforgiving, but handrawn sketches are always very forgiving.
