Layout: I like that you want to keep it simple by making it Google-like. But I think you can make it quite interesting by giving it the homepage a proper design. Try giving the search box a background and experiment.

Color Scheme: Go with a color scheme. The design of the search results' page is more like Delicious if the logo and search box is taken out.

Whitespace: Give some whitespace. I'd take out most of the things around in the homepage as well. For example, the 'E.g christmas, twitter etc.' part can go inside the text field that gets hidden upon focus.
