I think your dark/patterned background works in this design, but it's a little too obvious. I think a more subtle background would work better.
I'm not sure why it's so wide and not very tall? Is there something that will fill that space when the user does something?
I think you could go with boxes with corners instead of the curves, since your pictures are not rounded edges. It would keep it more consistent.
I really think you need to start at the sketch stage again. You seem to have a pretty good idea of what elements you want your site to include, but they aren't very elegantly put onto the page yet.
I'm sorry, I don't want it to sound like you have nothing good here. The important part is to know what usability you want! Try giving it more space vertically. If you put the filters horizontally you could get some space back that way. Stills/Fonts/Footage could become tabs.
