It looks like a start for a good logo.
I do think it needs to be pushed further - the placement in the rounded square with the gradient looks more default than intentional to me.
I think it stays at the initial stage of "quotation marks + Etnomark" and it needs something extra to make it stand out. One example of where quotation marks are used cleverly can be found here : http://creattica.com/logos/talkmore/2320
I like that the marks start to look like two people facing each other - maybe this can be pushed further? Just an idea.
I think you have a great subject matter, dealing with anthropology and different cultures and you need to have more fun with it :)
