I think you nailed your objective - but agree the concept does not quite jibe with the stripping away the myths of manhood concept stated in the brouchure, if anything the military style font in conjunction with the images seems to feed into the modern myths of manhood rather than strip them away. I would have used more images like the father and sons but kept the same tinted image look.

A big part of this brochure's development was based on another brochure for a near by church in Lancaster (LCBC) that is running the same program. The church administrator came to me and asked if I could basically replicate the other brochure quickly and get it printed, and so we kept some of the similar theme as theirs, but I went in a totally different design direction. Although it was important to him to keep the distressed look of the word "HEROES."
Also, alot of the imagery goes with adventure, danger and being a hero, thus the image of the knight and firefighter (which again were specific requests that came from similar images used on the other church's brochure).
Overall I still think they fit, because the program is a 3 year program. In year one the focus is on authentic manhood, and a strong emphasis on (obviously) becoming a hero rather than being a passive man.
