    the "h" stem length

Posted on Sep 29, 2009 at 10:22 PM

    Hi Nate.

Before even reading what this design was about I tried to figure out the letters in the green box. My first best conclusion was an "nd". I think if the stem was a tad bit longer on the "h" I would have no doubts.

The "W" in the word "web" is too small and does not fit the x -height of the "e" next to it.

I really like the typeface choice. It looks sleek and sophisticated.

My favorite of these is the first one. Maybe the stem length of "n" in the boxed "nd" could meet to the top and bottom of the "N" in the word "DESIGN" beside it. (That way not to lose the other cared for alignments?)

I do like the colors. Yet, feel readability would be better with a slightly darker green. If not, then a slightly bolder version of the font that you currently have for the sub text, may compensate?

If I might add, I like your current circle/distant icon on your website as well.

Thanks for the great feedback Amy. I agree that I need to work on legibility in all areas but especially the "hd" part. I will darken the greens, the greens were a completely different color on my other computer, didn't realize how light they were until this morning. Thanks again!

Hi Nate! I like your newer versions. All three look nice to me. The only last tweak I would suggest is to maybe open up the space between the letters a bit in " Web and Print Development" and bring the words slightly closer together. Then bring the " T " a tad closer to the "L" in Hamilton.

    Needs a little more prominence.

Posted on Sep 29, 2009 at 10:24 PM

First off... It looks very professional. I especially like the hd logo. However I think that maybe the color scheme and the typography could use a little more volume.

My suggestion would be a slight adjustment the fonts and colors.

    Change the "hd"

Posted on Sep 30, 2009 at 9:26 AM

I think this is a good start, it's very clean and professional looking.

    A couple of things:

At first glance, this looks like "na" to me, and not "hd". I would lengthen the ascenders of both letters.

I like the font choice for the company name, but I'm not a fan of it for "web and print development". I would change that font. I think a bit smaller would work well too.

Others have mentioned, the green is too soft. I agree.

For the "powered" version, I would make the URL under it flush right, bolder and a bit smaller (still, not a fan of that font).

Great review Stephanie, thanks for the feedback. I am going to address all of the things mentioned. You know how logos go, rarely if ever does the first go around work the best. Thanks again!

If it aint broke, don't fix it.

Posted on Sep 30, 2009 at 9:50 AM

I feel that it looks too much like 'ND' vs 'HD'. On a quick glance - one may think that it looks like 'NA'.

The font is a bit boring - it could be that the kerning is giving it a tight claustrophobic effect - maybe space it out more.

All-in-all it looks like a step backwards from your current logo. The one on your site is far better and I think you should work on that a bit more.

    Green

I think the green on the small text is hard to read, so maybe a darker green

You are right about the legibility. On my other computer that I designed the logo on, you could read it a lot better. Looks like I need to darken the greens. Thanks for the feedback!

alot the green is a lil washed out but...that's my opinion

love the logo, not really sold on the font, I like it for the tagline, just not in CAPS...

Keep going, you are on the right path...

Thanks for the review. I'll play around with some different fonts and definitely darken the green.

    text

Posted on Nov 06, 2009 at 6:09 PM

I like the gradient versions alot. I LOVE the hd symbol - that is clearly the strong point. The text is just a little blan for me though. Maybe I'm just not a fan of condensed fonts, but I can see how you'd clearly be in the go to use one in this layout.

Maybe try the HAMILTON in an even bolder weight. Also the "web and print development" just look too closely kerned together. Those letters need a little breathing room.

Overall I like your layout treatments, especially the first horizontal one. The "powered" logo is a very cool concept for your web credit tags.

Maybe in the end I'm just not sold on having your "hd" boxed in. I think that "hd" mark is a very strong piece, maybe try it just larger and without the box. (*don't like the versions at bottom where the hd is cut off - looks to much like "nd" or "na"

    Cheers!

    typography and the box

Posted on Nov 17, 2009 at 7:36 PM

    Hi Nate,

First, as you know, designing for yourself can be one of the most difficult challenges we face because you're so close to everything.

LOGOTYPE: I wonder if it makes sense to modify the font in "HAMILTON DESIGN" to make it more unique. The "G" kind of bugs me a little, just personally. It feels like it needs a more substantial horizontal line (is that considered a "stroke"?). Just a thought.

MARK: Also, since Adobe rebranded its product line using the squares, I've been seeing them everywhere. The mark you have there is strong enough to stand on its own. Anecdotally, it kind of reminds me of the old hand gesture for rock and roll (not sure if that's good or bad, but it is memorable to some extent).

OTHER: Last, the descriptors and taglines in that typeface are pretty hard to read due to their weight, the color, and the kerning. Have you considered using a serif font there?

LIAR: Sorry, I lied... LAST, LAST... The hd POWERED is pretty tite, I must say.

All the best. I hope my two cents resonates on some level and helps you in your quest.

    Piece. David

    no

Posted on Sep 30, 2009 at 10:30 AM

Not to beat up the whole "nd" thing, but I agree that it reads nd. It almost reads as "no".

I don't mind that green at all. I think it can work, just not for the tag line. The medium gray works well with it. I think replacing the dark gray with a deep blue would look good, but that's just my preference.

I like the font used for "hd", and I think the untouched versions would still look good in the square.

The type for hamilton design looks a little squished. going with lowercase may help.

    The logo

Posted on Sep 30, 2009 at 2:37 PM

I agree with some earlier posts that you should make the " hd " more distinguishable. Not to keen on the mint-like green. I just don't want the logo to seem like you have been around too long. It has an interior design feel about, and I think if you spice it back up like your original logo it can do you some good. I still like it, it just doesn't fit what you're going for.

    Improve the icon

Posted on Sep 30, 2009 at 7:07 PM

Good choice on lettering, smooth, sleek and catchy. The logo also proofed to work good on both portrait and landscape, although I think you might have to drop the bottom line on smaller sizes.

The only thing I would improve is the icon. The letters inside it should be more "readable". This can be achieved by simply raising the "H" and the "D" on top. I would also try a less "pastel" color, giving the logo a new, stronger look.

Very nice job. I'm sure you're almoust there!

    not clear

Posted on Oct 01, 2009 at 1:26 PM

If I have seen only the logo, I'd not have been able to conclude that the logo stands for HamiltonDesign.

The initials, h and d, need to be easy to recognise. You definitely got a unique approach on design, but need to work on the initials to make them distinguishable.

    font choose

Posted on Oct 02, 2009 at 11:07 PM

the thing that bothers me the most is the use of two very different font for the workmark. Why is one line condensed and one regular?

about the logo mark, what is it suppose to be? I can't seem to make it out.

I can barely read the gray text below as its on a white background. I do like the green box and the shape of the hd there though.
