    Navigation, orange and footer

Posted on Sep 20, 2009 at 10:09 PM

NAVIGATION From the screenshot, I'm guessing the part under the logo is a post. And the part below the navigation are two posts. So the navigation is splitting the navigation? As a visitor that confuses me.

As a web designer, if someone clicks "read more" in the first post, what will be the content of that area? Another post? The same thing? I can't think of anything that can make it work.

ORANGE Don't aim for a color scheme that goes with most photos, aim for one that will go with all and that mean black, white and shades of grey. It sounds boring, but you don't have to worry about being boring, the quality of the photos will take care of that. I've done enough photography websites to be able to claim that.

FOOTER The footer looks weird. It isn't aligned with the rest of the website. It looks like the kid that everybody makes fun of in high school. The same thing goes for the tiny text above facebook and twitter in the sidebar.

DESIGN I really like your design. The content you put above the navigation is good for the homepage, but I suggest you lose it for every pages beyond.

That's a good point about the footer. The text that is misaligned was definitely a forgotten detail. I am not sure what to do with the footer though. I have tried a lot of different angles with it but nothing has really grabbed me. Any ideas on what I could do with it, ideas welcome...

First, I would suggest that you start by moving the footer to the left to align with the logo and all the content above.

Second, the layout of your footer might look better if it was like Flickr's footer - http://www.flickr.com/ - meaning linear instead of columnar.

I agree with the recommended color scheme for photo websites. A lightly colored beige or off-white can work as well.

    Text size in paragraphs

Posted on Sep 26, 2009 at 12:41 AM

    Hi Nate,

I really like the colors and the textured backgrounds. (lovely)

I'm torn though...since I have also been told that the gray's / blacks are the best for presenting your work on. So...What to do?

Also, I am wondering if the paragraphs text is a bit to small? I can't really tell from the screen shot. Just maybe a few points bigger to comfortably read?

Maybe a brighter colored text, for more contrast, on the title "Pearl St. Resources"?

    Make the bog less prominant

Posted on Sep 21, 2009 at 3:36 AM

The client does want to blend both the blog and the company website into one, but for me, the blog should be a secondary thing.

I would have small exerts of the blog posts on the right, and what the company does and offers in the main content area.

    Nice clean design though.

    Menu positioning

Posted on Sep 21, 2009 at 2:12 PM

    Hey Nate,

I really like what you've done here. The layout is clean and fresh, Iove the colors.

    What's problematic for me:

    1. Menu (as Long noticed). I suggest that you put the menu topmost below the logo. It's a bit into the site right now and may confuse users.

    2. What's with the content on the sidebar? Are those categories? If yes, I would name them that way.

    3. The sitemap and vertical categories make no sense to me. Why are they there? I would go for most recent comment, featured post ... repeat the menu or something ... (back to top is cool).

    Otherwise it's a like from me ;) Z.

    Bigger photo on home page

Posted on Sep 22, 2009 at 5:06 PM

I really like the layout, sidebar column (that lays on top of everything else) background and colors. My only single criticism is that I'd like to see a much larger photo, maybe where you have the center content right below the logo/header. If this is a photography portfolio site, I'd want an example photo to really stand out on the home page. Very, very nice site, though.

Good thoughts Chris. I do agree with you. Throughout the site there will be larger pictures. On the home page the client had requested that the home page looks very bloggish. Within each post there will be large postings of the pictures. Stay tuned and I'll post what the rest of the site will look like. Thanks for the feedback!

I think you've done a great job. I wouldn't change much at all. Shadows are really nice. lots of layering. the orange is a nice touch. I really like it.

Posted on Sep 22, 2009 at 5:20 PM

I like. I like. I really do like the layout & the way it looks & feels. I would like to see the rest of the pages thoa to determine how great of a site it is. Everyone gave you they're advice on the navi, but me it's just to see if all the other pages stay in place & workout the same.

I'll get there. First I have to make sure the client approves the basic design before I move onto more pages. I will make sure to post additional pages once I have them designed. Thanks for the feedback!

i think you should try the main nav up the top of the site. it just seems to break the website up too much in my eyes. otherwise great!

    Move Main Navigation

Posted on Oct 06, 2009 at 10:25 AM

Very nice design, colors, and choice of font. I'd suggest moving the main navigation to a more conventional location up top. I understand this design might be trying to stand out from the pack, but messing with the position of the main nav might be too much.

I'd also stress the work and photographs over the blog posts, though it looks like the blog posts stress the photography as well.

I love the color scheme and layout. I agree with most on moving the nav under the logo. I would also add copy about the company above your blog section. That would give the corporate feel along with the blog feel. I would also repeat the top navigation in the footer horizontally and take the categories out. Are you going to have the right nav on every page? Then it really isn't needed in the footer.

it sounds like a lot of the people who've already commented had great feedback--looks cool, make the main navigation menu more prominent, i like the blog feel, bigger pics would be cool, designs & colors are sweet, name the sidebar category menu "categories" so it's more self-explanatory, do something with the bottom navigation (personally, I think i would like to just not even had it - i'm not a big fan of menus in multiple places, i like to keep it way simple, but that's just me :)...If you decided to go the route of not having one feature blog on top with a quote, then other blogs with the first part of the text--having the menu on top, then blogs--maybe you could have the blogs each just show a quote, then you only see the text when you click "read more" or whatever? just an idea. Nate, you're doing awesome work!

Looks awesome in my opinion. Love the choice of colors and overall style. Very professional look.

I continue to be amazed at how people can tweak Wordpress for really extreme application.

    Too much going on

Posted on Sep 21, 2009 at 12:08 PM

I like the basic concept, although the strong orange is a little distracting, rather than working as an effective highlight color. If the "corporate" section it that section at the top, I would never think to click there. It looks like a testimonial or just another blog entry. I do like the integrated blog idea, but it still feels like a little like a Worpress site moonlighting as a actual website. I assume the image on the right bar will change with other posts to encourage clicking. I find them too distracting, and would probably skip them all together.
