First, I love the site. I'm a regular user and love having the site's few simple tools at my fingertips when searching.

However just recently I discovered the 'Browse Icon Sets' section of the site. I like how the Google-style homepage calls attention to the search, but maybe something else can be done to call out the Browse Sets section.

Like making a more graphical treatment below the search box?

But I DO like how you've made the search the feature. 9 times out of 10 I come to the site looking for a specific logo concept and use the search. I guess the trick is making the browse feature more prominent while not taking away from the search. Good luck!

Looks a bit cramped, add space

Posted on Sep 08, 2009 at 2:15 PM

Definitely a great start, I really like the logo and the drawing looks really good. I also must say this is a great idea, I will be using this!

I would, however remove and resize a couple of elements to achieve the clean look of Google.

The text below the logo could be a little smaller. Also the search button might look better if it had a hint of your colours of blue and green.

The links at the bottom seem to be a bit crowded so I would suggest moving or removing some of them, or at least re-styling the 'hosting supported by...' (for example align to the right and with a colour of grey).

Also I think to create a more spacial feel you should space some of the things out on the page, leaving a bigger gap between lines.

Overall it looks great, just needs tweaking a little and it will look really good.

    A few home page tweaks...

Posted on Sep 09, 2009 at 9:59 AM

I like that you decided to make the example terms clickable because they're popular search terms and you can save people time, but I think the size of the font contributes to a slightly cluttered look. Consider shrinking them and centering them under the box rather than the centering them in the body of the page.

I think the feedback about the browsing icon sets link being almost hidden in plain sight could be attributed to the fact that the logo and page design itself is so good in explaining what the site does. Because of that, people aren't likely to read the entire sentence "Search through 110,023..." it's so obvious that you can search this site for icons I don't need to read any further.

Perhaps if you shrink the text box (I doubt most users will need that much space for their search terms) and change the Search button text to read "Search - 110,023 icons" (or similar) you would have room to provide a "Browse icon sets" link next to the search button where it would be more visible.

The logo illustration is spot on. Did you do it yourself?

Close space between ICON and the word FINDER

Posted on Sep 10, 2009 at 12:30 AM

Hi I love this and think the little " i "guy is the cutest thing!~

I just noticed there is a bit to much space between the words "us" to "on" and "on" to "twitter". Also, to keep this little bit of type consistent. There is more space between the orange block icon to the word "get" then there is to the T blue icon to the word "follow". Also, the letters "i" and "c" are touching each other in the word icon (above orange icon block). As well as, in the word "design" the "i" and "g" are touching each other.

On the second page: Maybe try a different font, or lighter weight of font, a few points bigger for links of " Browse icon sets", "custom icon design" and "forum" ?

What does the type above the "Icon Finder" logo on page 2 say? It is way to small. Why is this icon not the same as on page one (due to that)?

Well, love the illustration, the eye reminded me of monster Inc. right away. If it was a different color I know it would not look like it came right out of the movie. Yet, I still love it and find it is applied uniquely.

I personally would bring the word "ICON" down lower to the word "FINDER" in your logo. There is too much space to trap the eye.

Overall, this is very lovely and it made me interested to see what this site has to offer.

    Change the search box

Posted on Sep 09, 2009 at 3:40 AM

I like it, other than a few little issues.

I would make the search button work more with the colour scheme of the site, at the moment it looks a little generic.

I would maybe also scale it down a little, not too much though.

Love the logo, and the design is very good overall.

Posted on Feb 12, 2010 at 11:47 AM

The illustration is GREAT. and the simplicity of the interface is nice. You've simplified it so much you might want to take advantage of it and add some more whitespace.

Also consider showing examples of search results for your E.g. Under "arrow, search or twitter" it might be nice to show the top 5 icons for each search term.

Great bit of intelligent marketing by posting it on this site! :) as most of this community is your core audience!

This design looks great, in fact, it looks like i would suspect when looking for icons.

The only thing that bugs me is the fact that you try to put everything so close together.

1- create space between the thumbnails on you second image

2- try to put as less as possible on the frontpage

That's it. Good luck with your great design!

    Add Search By File Type

Posted on Sep 15, 2009 at 2:31 PM

From Usability perspective you have done a great job! Congrats on that. It's really easy to use the site.

If you can add search by "File Type" that would be great. Because sometimes you don't want certain type of files. If you can use checkboxes for this, that would be more usable. That way you can uncheck the file types you don't want to appear on search results.

One more thing, slider for file dimensions is not very clear from first look. Perhaps you can add a title to that? Size: or something.

The hide-show is a better idea. Make it so that when a user (who selected HIDE, when first visited) revisits the website, the options are hidden. I think you can jQuery and it is simple.

    Layout

Posted on Jan 13, 2010 at 5:56 PM

    • Layout: I like that you want to keep it simple by making it Google-like. But I think you can make it quite interesting by giving it the homepage a proper design. Try giving the search box a background and experiment.

    • Color Scheme: Go with a color scheme. The design of the search results' page is more like Delicious if the logo and search box is taken out.

    • Whitespace: Give some whitespace. I'd take out most of the things around in the homepage as well. For example, the 'E.g christmas, twitter etc.' part can go inside the text field that gets hidden upon focus.

Have you been using it since 2007?

I like the logo even though it's a bit silly. I think it's easy to remember and a lot of people like it, so it's going to stay :-)

    Love the simplicity

Love it but would (at the risk of messing up the sparse beauty of the home page) include more teasers/features on the home. More information about icon sets may be helpful. A random "peek" of icon samples may inform a user of what to expect. Licensing check boxes near the search field might help.

Yeah, I know there front page could have more stuff. Maybe I'll do an alternative front pages, that you can turn on if you are a registered user.

      Thanks for the feedback.

I liked the design, it is simple, like first page of google. I add on my bookmarks. Congratulations, it is a wonderful solid design.

    Bulkiness

Posted on Jan 23, 2010 at 7:46 PM

    Pros:

The design is straightforward, and it basically screams "you're here to find icons."

I'm sorry, I mistakenly pressed enter ahead of time.

By bulkiness, I mean the overall feel of the content pages. There's something about the aesthetic of those pages, namely the icon selection areas themselves, that make the area seem rather out of place.

      Thanks for feedback.

I'm not sure what pages you're refering to. Can you provide a link?

      Thanks.

totally disagree. Think your robot is what makes this design.
