I did not create the website. A B2B web development company, Markinson Satch, Inc, created the website. My client is very happy with their work.

Your print work is better than their web

Posted on Aug 28, 2009 at 9:27 AM

Your print work is actually much cleaner and better thought out than their web site. Not sure if you were the person designing that too - but it's a bit busy with all these graphic elements that don't do much.

The only thing on that top image in your concepts is the drop shadow from the header. What if you made the shadow a translucent strip of solid instead of a shadow? Drop shadows look a little weird on print media.

The only other thing are perhaps the horizontal lines in the background - I almost want them to curve too.

    Hope this helps! Nice work.

I did not create the site, but it was a guide for my graphics since it is Gordian's new site which they are proud of. I will post their web design's name for Serouj, he gave it a thumbs up.

Good comment about the shadow. I mean excellent comment. I am going to change that shadow to translucent. I was subconsciously aware of the shadow issue, but did think of the solution. I just got approval on the second design, but I am going to sneak it in there, my client is very cool.

    more consistency

Posted on Aug 28, 2009 at 4:54 PM

I hate giving criticism to hard work, but the print material just doesn't reflect the website. They use mainly horizontal/vertical lines. They have pictures of people in suits, in offices, not hardhats in the field. If they use curves, they're very subtle. The positive here is that I like the print designs you have done, but I just don't think they are consistent with the site. It's almost 2 different messages - and maybe that's the intent. Just read about the client wanting curves - you might want to explain why that may not be a good idea, or tone down the curves to match the site. I'm impressed by your design and obvious skills, but again, the 2 don't seem to match.

This is not criticism that you gave me. I agree with you about some of the difference between site and print.

I kept going back to the client on this same topic. He told me not to take make such a strict interpretation. He just wants those curves.

Yikes! You've got one of those clients. Well, then, I'm truly feeling your strain. My opinion is that you've done the best you could with little creative license. GOOD JOB!

Oh he is a great client, but all my clients seem to want to opposing things.

    Just some polish!

Posted on Aug 28, 2009 at 5:26 PM

Definitely go with the first one, the second is too stark. What about a faint blueprint texture in the background of the cover? I can't tell, but maybe that's what you have there already.

I understand you were following the slight curve of the blue ribbon behind it, but I think the tagline might look better straight. I don't think the curved text fits with the rest of the design, because you don't have any other text on a curve. Speaking of text, what about making the title of the document the green color? Seems they use that for subheads on the website.

The gradient boxes seem to be a prominent design element on the website. Have you considered using the same style for the cover? Perhaps you can incorporate a slight gradient in the background blue. Also, use rounded corners when possible.

I would also suggest making the green band along the bottom solid instead of transparent (maybe a slight gradient?); I don't think we need to see the corners of the white box, and it would serve to focus attention more on the title of the document.

Finally, the middle with the white area serves as kind of a spotlight, but if you were to draw an oval, the top and bottom area don't align along the same shape. Does that make sense? Draw an oval selection (it can be as distorted as you want) and make the curves look like part of the same object. Of course, that's just a suggestion, but I think it would add to the unity.

You did a great job keeping within the visual guidelines they wanted you to! It's not a terribly exciting kind of project to work on, I know.

great, I took some of your comments and Aurimas Adomavicius comment and revised this work. Client requested a lot of clean space for white area for text specific to each project which he will input. My new work is posted at the top

    Reduce the height of pictures

Posted on Aug 29, 2009 at 4:54 PM

If this is for content, then reduce the height of pictures so the client can have more white space for content. The same with footer... try to reduce the height of the curve so the client has more space for his content.

I'm not a fan of curves, so I honestly don't like them. But as I read in one of your comments, if this is what the client wants then go with it.

I prefer version #1. And I will get rid of the blue line on the back of images.
