I don't mind the simplicity of it really, but it seems like you should try extending the animation some. Since the animation happens so quickly they have less of a chance of being noticed, so it's really not much different than a static banner. Maybe even include a rollover effect to make it less static.
While I wait for a few secs for the first box to appear, I already LOOKED.
If you really want to go with this approach, make the animation more misterious and sexy. Maybe hiding most of the image and then slowly showing the message or something.
It's a double meaning. While doing the planning for these ads, in a meeting the owner of snorgtees.com gave me the run down on the effectiveness of their static ads (and I repeat this on another reply to you on another banner). Their static ads are nothing more than a picture of a young female model wearing a tight snorgtees t-shirt (with no bra) and a logo somewhere in the layout. Well, young, female boobs sell t-shirts. They get guys to visit the site. THese ads will be on drudge.com, facebook, myspace and a host of other big-time websites. The owner could even tell me which models were more effective at getting hits on the site. And, this is a very successful business right now. So, with that in mind...I focused on the theme that big boobs sell. When you see this static picture of this girl...most eyes wonder just south of her chin to an area that happens to also contain a snorgtees shirt design. So, "go ahead and look" means 3 things: look at the melons, look at the shirt design, and go look at the site - the ad's main purpose and message. Click Here is a call to action and a way to frame the boobs and the design. And, then you have the logo at the bottom. Does that help you understand my design and strategy behind it?
I'd love to see this add with an rollover action. For an example, when you rollover "Go Ahead" or "Click Here" an animation will indicate action. Like changing size, blur effects, vertical movement.
Yes! I would definitely agree, and I did consider that when designing/coding. However, that would have put the file size over the limit (60 kb). I figured that the basic "link" action would suffice - when the cursor changes from an arrow to a hand pointing a finger. This project was a classic example of designers as problem solvers! I had a lot of problems to solve and still produce an effective design.
If you use ActionScript to animate it, it won't be heavy. Just 10-15 top lines of code.
very true. so, you would've applied the effects on rollover to the button or to the image? But, if you notice, the whole banner is a link...they also wanted it that way for this one. Good ideas though.
ah, yes...I forgot to include the requirements and special restrictions: 1. Can't be more than 15 sec long and must stop after that (so, when implemented, the animation won't commence until the user scrolls to it)
has to be the size it is. I have others of different sizes that I will post soon.
can't be more than 60kb
So, with that in mind, please re-think your critique and then rewrite it. If you still feel the same way about it, that's fine, but I think with those restrictions in mind, you can understand my method of design a little better. thanks.
