    Few things...

Posted on Aug 25, 2009 at 12:55 PM

First of let me say I'm a bit of a fan of Arsenal. I think we've purchased one pack from you guys - good products.

On to the critique - professional presentation, clean layout, nice use of contrast.

MY only comment would be about picture 3. I would like to see that right side box be replaced with much larger typography. Since you're going to have a slider there from what I can tell, you should be able to use some custom fonts and use nice big typography for Photo-realistic. Underneath you can have an image / html, etc. But that box right now is outweighed by the shirt on the left.

Another little discombobulation is the two boxes underneath. I think you don't need those boxes themsvelves. The content itself should enforce the grid layout just fine. Right now the way they slide under the horizontal line doesn't look right.

    Hope this helps.

Oh, I'm glad you're familiar with the Arsenal, thanks for the kind words.

I really like your ideas. Will definitely be implementing those suggestions as soon as Photoshop recovers from a crash :-(

      Thanks!

    Thanks for the update

    This is a quick review.

I found your site awhile ago. It did not appeal to me, it felt too dark, too teenage and while I did like your products, I did not feel it was for me and never purchased anything

This site is now something I would get my credit card out for.

The search results page is confusing for me, from this distance. Not sure what is going on there, but It may be different live.

This new look is perfect. It still has the black, so the branding is appearant. It looks super easy to use. Students to Instructors will enjoy this site.

Hey Jennifer - thanks for sharing your thoughts. Oddly enough, we've shared some of your feelings!

Oh, and the search page is queried by keyword, tabbed by resource size (single image, pack of images, bundle of packs) depending on how many images you're looking for. Does that help clarify the search page, or is it still a little confusing?

:) Very well put Jennifer - that's exactly what the existing site looks like, yet I couldn't figure out how to put it in words. :)

Adam, yes that clarify's the search page, that should work well.

Aurimas, Thanks and glad I did not offend. Does this mean I get a point?

    Just add color!

Posted on Aug 25, 2009 at 7:59 PM

I like the simple, usable design but I agree with other reviewers that it could benefit from an addition of a few colors or add more of the purple color that appears on the shirt or add a bit more of the blue in the "add to cart" button.

How does the tabbed navigation work? Will certain tabs appear only if the page has been loaded? For instance, if you click on the "Graphics" category the "Graphics" tab will appear. If that's the case, awesome! I like that idea. I'd really love to see it live.

      Hey Corinne,

Thanks for the tips. I would like to add more of the blue add to cart color, but I really want that color to exclusively signify "add to cart".

We've also decided on colors for resource categories. Usually, we chose colors similar to the Adobe application which opens the file types in the category (orange for vector files, blue for Photoshop Brushes). You can see these colors on the filter bar of the search page. (image 4)

I agree that the site needs more color. I think that most of the color kick will come from the large image slideshow on the homepage & category landing pages. The one you're seeing in image 3 isn't really a good example.

      Now, about the navigation:

If you've used Ubuntu or Windows Vista, you already know how 90% of it works. As you navigate through the layers of the site, the breadcrumb / tabs appear across the top.

Each breadcrumb will have a subnav (best example is the home page). This subnav can be accessed easily from any level by hovering over a breadcrumb / tab.

Make sense? Seem usable? Confusing? Maybe this Vimeo Video will clear things up a bit:

I'm really thankful for everyone's thoughts

I get it! I don't use Ubuntu or Vista so it's a little new to me. I think it's a great way to treat breadcrumbs.

    Nothing... well, maybe some color.

Posted on Aug 29, 2009 at 8:25 PM

I love this design. Clean and simple, yet powerful. The only thing I will change if any is that I will add some color to it. It's too gray for me.

    Excellent job!

    Navigation and Background Color

Posted on Sep 02, 2009 at 8:04 AM

Firstly, I'd like to say "Nice! Very... nice!". Well thought out layout, good use of white space, and great contrast between header and content.

I'd change the navigation for the categories though. They seem lost and faded into the background instead of standing out and looking "clickable".

The non-conventional use design and placement of the breadcrumb is also a little misleading. At first glance, I thought the breadcrumb was actually the main navigation. I'd place it below the page title, albeit still maintaining the great apple-inspired design.

One thing on colors: I'm actually disagreeing with everyone else. Less colors means more focus on your product. Let your products do the talking.

To aid against the "dullness", you could perhaps lighten your background color a little (blending too much with the boxes, panels, navigation, etc), or use a top-down neutral tone gradient starting from the main nav downwards.

    More color

Posted on Aug 25, 2009 at 3:14 PM

Great design. Very modern, very simple, perfect for your target.

I'd personally add more color to it. Use that pinkish color from picture 3 more.

    Great work.

Overall the design is very nice, simple and clean, it gives off the impression of being user friendly too. I really do like this design but like I said, it does look a tad bit plain in colour but sometimes this can turn out to be a good thing and work well.
