Generally it looks nice, I think you did a good job. Although, I would change few things. Maybe it would all look better if the header background would align with the content's left side. This way, when you're watching it on a 1680x1050 px resolution it kind of looks scattered. I would also loose the timestamp from the top right corner because everyone has a clock on their computers so that info is really not so important or relevant. About the navigatiom, I believe it would look better if the tabs had more padding and less margin. I would also change the color of the Heading 3 because it lacks contrast and is therefore very hard to read (especially on low quality LCD screens). Maybe you should reconsider the alignment of your texts because not many people use justified, but rather left. Also, it would look better if the content div wouldn't have such a large right padding. Loose it completely and it would look much better. And finally, I would change the styling of list titles in the footer. Also, it would be better if links actually had different styling for :hover (e.g. underline). I think the base is good and you can make a fine personal website if you do some more work on it ;)
something like that, yes. the #content div has a 10px right margin and the #sidebar div has a 10px left margin. that's 20px of space between them and I think that's enough. I like the feeling of enough whitespace, but not if it means that the web looks incoherent ;)
i suggest you create a textured header or a blend of colors you wish to use depending on your theme. the page could be boring for some. your menus, try to make it more visible for your viewers. add more materials to it.
I agree about the texture. I will try that. Maybe I will add texture and use a radial mask to darken all but around the logo...
very appealing and easy on the eyes.
i like the colour combinations, also
i would add (personally) some more images, though, and i would translate the text into English, etc- no one really uses Latin anymore! (haha)
I feel like there are two different styles to this design: the cleaner web 2.0 (is that right?) style on the left, and the collage style on the right. But that's super nitpicky. I think you've handled this well, and I especially like the header. Nice work!
Actually, I see several problems in the layout. But if you're posting the job is because he wants to improve it. So here we go. Be careful when using justified text. It can generate many rivers in the space between words, especially in narrow columns. This eliminates the texture. One of the key to building a website is to define a grid. Try reading more about grids. Be careful when using shadows photoshop. Usually they are very artificial.
Paolo was harsh but right. No matter what you do, keep an eye on details and always do your best.
It doesn't matter if it is intended to be a blog, it is part of you and people will related the website as part of you and your organization/company.
BTW, the design is not bad at all. Just work with the content presentation. Make it more readable.
Honestly in this you should ask yourself why someone would ask you a web work looking at this. There's nothing creative, nothing showing your skills. And it look a lot as a "standard" blog. It will be ok as a personal blog of a guy writing his personal things but not for something involving a professional work.
I hope you will have at least a nice portfolio with amazing website because it will be the only chance for you to catch a work in such a way.
Sorry I had to be honest. Take a look to other blog, even choose a theme and work on it to change a bit, but I don't think you will go anywere with this one.
thanks for the honesty. This is really not going to be my "pick up clients" site, but I imagine that clients may possibly wander here, and I want it to withstand scrutiny. It really is just a blog, but I suppose I need to make it more unique.
thanks a lot for taking the time to give suggestions, I will definitely implement them. When you say to lose the padding completely, you mean to bring the content right next to the sidebar?
