Less Counselling language and more human

Posted on Aug 12, 2009 at 8:38 PM

Love the concept and design, really hits the sport for the target. ONly think I would re-think is the descriptors used such as "suicide prevention" "social Issues" "job interest inventories". How about using plain benefit language such as "get support" "a listening ear" and so on. Of course youdont want to be too colloquial but it matches the style of the poster and can make the counselling services more approachable.

I hadn't even thought of that. Somebody just told me I had all the "negative" terms under and "positive" at the top. I will have to play with the terms themselves. Thanks for great feedback!

    where is the councelors office?

Posted on Aug 12, 2009 at 11:20 AM

"I'm new to this school, and i could really used some help switching into a new course, and I'm not sure where the councilors office. "

Not sure if it's a standard poster for many high schools but maybe leave a space where the individual school can write in the room where the students can find the councilor.

It's a great design! I love the colors! beautiful poster!

That's a really good idea that I hadn't even thought of. I will have to come up with either a way they can put in the info, or another poster that is specifically "your counselor is located in room...." and print a couple in house for each of the 200 schools.

Thanks for the idea, and the feedback!

    Great design

Posted on Aug 12, 2009 at 10:56 AM

I love this -- not sure I'd change anything... perhaps make the URL more visible (but, then again, if this is a large poster, the URL might be plenty visible in its actual size).

Ideally, there would be more than one way to contact the counselor office though... phone #, email? Or would the counselor office be so accessible (as in the room down the hall) that no other contact info is needed?

    Great work.

Thank you for the feedback! I should have put in the description - this poster will be printed at 24x36. This is a series to go into 200 different schools, so contact info wouldn't work...unless I could get variable data printing. Hmmm....

      Thanks again!

I like this one a lot. Hat off to you!

Reminds me of some of the entries in the 'what is graphic design' poster competition which i found entries for on flickr.

Love the faded wallpaper effect. Oh and the finger like coloured bars stretching around the poster almost hugging it.

    Tis good.

    Not a thing...

Posted on Aug 12, 2009 at 7:12 PM

Overall, this poster is visually appealing and gets the point across perfectly. Is this what posters look like around high schools now? It would definitely have caught my attention, and who knows, maybe I would have gone straight to the counselor's office just because of this poster.

I would almost say (If you're looking to test anything out) maybe try a little something with the colored bars that are coming in from the top and bottom right. They look fine, but I'm thinking a little bit of texture or wear 'n' tear might blend them in a little bit more to bring more focus to the 'Talk to your school counselors' text.

But, like I said, if you're looking to change a little something. It definitely works as is.

    Love the design. Vote ^

    Background

Posted on Aug 13, 2009 at 5:04 AM

I really like it, but just one thing...

with that background it seems that an old person will give the advice...

I repeat, I really like the poster but to capture people going to have the advidce, maybe something more "open" would be necessary, not a background that reminds to old people...u know what I mean?

    Hope it helps!

Thanks, I hadn't thought of that. Hmmm.

It is part of a series. I'm still tweaking the others. One is a concept my boss came up with and is horrible. One is a poster one of our student interns created - it's a graffiti wall and the heading is "talk to your counselor" written as if it's spray painted on the wall. And I'm still mulling the final one. I think I will create something with the room number as Andrea and Brian pointed out this one was lacking.

Maybe with all 4, this one will look less old??

I will play with a more vector, less texture version of this. See if that's better.

      Thank YOu!

    I would change the background

Posted on Aug 13, 2009 at 5:47 PM

    Hey Angie,

I like this one a lot. What I would change is the background. If this goes to High School students it should be more dynamic. Also, I wouldn't fade the colors, I would make them brighter instead.

    That's about it.

    Main Typeface

Posted on Aug 14, 2009 at 8:05 AM

    I love this!

Love the colours, love the textured wallpaper, love the typography...expect the red typeface in the centre.

I like the contrast of old-fashioned and modern but I personally don't the Blippo typeface. Just my personal preference but apart from that good job.

Also a general tightening up of the leading might improve the layout, maybe mirroring the gaps you have in the rounded corner strips.

Perhaps also make the call to action stand out more.

    The background

Posted on Aug 15, 2009 at 12:28 AM

I love the colors dripping down...(almost like paint) but I too feel the background color could cause a deaf eye of today's generation. Maybe use plaid. The kids seem to like it. Maybe for your next one, you could make it look like an actual concert ticket stub.

    Dodea font?

Posted on Aug 15, 2009 at 4:58 PM

Not much I can really say, this piece speaks for itself clearly. Easy to read the diagonal text even in order. Not a big fan of the font used for Dodea, but that's the brand itself. Andrea mentioned that the URL should be more prominent, which I agree with.

    The "To" and "Your" gap

Posted on Aug 29, 2009 at 7:04 PM

    Hi I love this poster.

I see that you have alignment going on everywhere. Very awesome. The alignment that grabs me wrong is the "To" and "YOUR" gap. I don't know the exact solution...maybe to make just those two words smaller to close that gap and align the word "to" to the bottom of that K rectangle?

I would maybe take the smaller bars out unless if you want to add small bars up top as well for consistency?

    Really like the colors...

    website url

Posted on Sep 13, 2009 at 3:52 AM

I like the treatment of the background as well as the colors used. However, i would have put the website url to somewhere more visible. Doesn't have to be bigger font, but it has to be placed at somewhere more prominent. The rest of the text has a flow to it, it guides the viewers eyes.... but the website url, the most important element of all, is just detached from the rest.
