    Font

I think the font size is too larger forcing the design to look 'cluttered'. maybe make it a point or 2 smaller, add some line space and even change the colour to a dark grey.

I would also make the border of the images thinner.

    Hope this helps.

    Play some more

Posted on Aug 11, 2009 at 9:09 AM

You have limitations, which makes the creative process less fun. But, I would play some more with this.

Try taking the fuchsia block at the top and extending it all the way across. Then take the bold black line and start it under that block. Also try making the dates all caps and see how that works.

Or - try tying those headings to the top part of the cover. See how you have part black, part fuchsia? Maybe put the month in black and the rest in fuchsia. OR time black date pink.

I would also try putting the talk title in the pink color.

Maybe also put the people's photographs in black and white so there is less color pulling your attention. Maybe also play with the flapper and put her as a duotone matching the pink? See how that looks.

Can you get a less distracting photo of the emblem for the cover? Maybe even illustrate it? That's the only part of the cover bugging me.

just some thoughts to help you play :)

Thanks. I will try some of these.

I don't like the cover image much either, but it does tie it together.

    Too busy

Too busy. Less is more. Use less text. more space between columns

Less is more is my mantra, but I have already cut a lot of the supplied text.

The document is 6pp not columns, more space will just squash the text more.

    try and break some rules!

Posted on Aug 10, 2009 at 3:31 PM

There are newer, more exciting font choices that would also be easy to read. Arial is overused, and maybe if you present a new font, they'll like it and say "yes" ...the worst that could be said is "no" but at least you'll have tried.. Its important to try and push for things, even if its difficult. i don't really understand what tudor style is, when regarding graphic design, i looked it up and found mostly information about architecture, and being in the english era of king henry vii to elizabeth i. which does relate to two of the talks. but i don't know that adding the lines helps the design. the space seems a little crowded, the text in the "all the rage section is sparce, and the rest too plentiful. maybe you could find a way to give the talk only the amount of room it needs, instead of equally dividing the space and then squishing the info for tudors and allington castle.. also, the image of the fashion talk.. might be good to keep her right hand! seems that you're doing the best you can with the pre-detirmined restraints, but keep pushing it, you'll get there! talk them into trying new things!

Unfortunately as the person who has to enforce our branding, breaking the rules is not an option.

Maybe I should have said a style reminicent of tudor architecture :)

Actually the walk image I believe is a tudor style house in the village and the image on the cover is actually the scout speaker's scarf toggle, so I feel justified in having a tudor theme.

I am hoping to get a flapper image from the speaker, so should solve the hand problem.

    Color Scheme

Posted on Aug 10, 2009 at 3:44 PM

I would also try a new and more modern, sleek looking color. There's tons of examples on this website that could help. I think the red color on the brocure looks dated...especially combined with the faces of older people. Try and make old people feel cool, connected, and that they matter. If you can do that with changing the font and color scheme, I think you will have a much better brocure. Sorry for the negative feedback.

    Less Busy

    Simplify this sucker up.

Theres way to much going on, it needs to be broken up so it can quickly be read and scanned for important information.

If you'd seen how much text I've already cut out, you would see the compromise.
