Love the work Ben. This is a great showcase for your undoubted talent. Simple to get around and very clear on your attributes.
The only layout issue I can see is the transition btw 3 col text and 4 col images. The vertical line rule seems out of place and the Twitter section looks like it should be narrower and align with the image below.
Some of the language in your text areas is a little too casual, familiar. Keep it friendly, but drop the "Hey"; the "I'd love for you" and the "you guys."
I agree with the comments of several others. Next/back on the full size images is mandatory. My attention span is too short to be going back and forth btw images and menu. Logotype is attractive but illegible. The angle of the S's should be in the opposite direction.
Delete the social buttons from the thumbnail rollovers and link the whole image. It's enough that they're on the contact page. Maybe repeat on the home page at bottom right.
Suggestions for tidying up the portfolio text: Replace all the text on the rollovers with just a client name in bold and the instruction, as you currently have it. Use a more detailed description on the full size image, eg.
Rollover: Blackhole Snowboards – click to view. Pop up: Front and back design of snowboard in 2009 range
Rollover: Indi Magazine – click to view. Pop up: Business card and stationery artwork for specialist business magazine
For all your "personal" work, give each one a client name, even if they're fictitious. Restrict your text to just the bold name. Again, put a description on the pop up, eg:
Rollover: Juice – Click to view. Pop up: Prospective logo design for fresh juice bar franchise
Rollover: Party Packs – Click to view. Pop up: Leaflet for gift company promoting their summer season hampers
Clearly, I've invented the descriptions, but you get the idea. It's more important for employers to feel you understand a brief and an industry sector than simply what you do. It's irrelevant that the work is "personal".
Hope this helps.
Thanks very much for your feedback steve and taking the time to write a helpful review. I've taken these comments on board with enthusiasm!
Great stuff
It's a stunning website already. However, you always have something to work on and perfect. Maybe, they could make it a little more social?
Love it , but as a per previous comment, the font size needs to be increased by one or two pixels at least.
I'm looking at this on a 17" macbook pro with a high res screen and I struggled a little to read it.
the current size, as you prob know, is 11px. I normally use that size for my footers and copyright text.
I think 16px should be the standard and lowest size to use as its the same size as a standard printed text book and all browsers render it the same.
I increased the text size to 12/13/14 px with fire fox and 13/14px was a good size for your site. it works well with the rest of the design as well as being easily legible..
A good design overall. If I could change one thing, then maybe a more prominent navigation. Although the current one serves its purpose.
I like the concept and the design. Form my point of view the font size is fine bigger maybe is too much! Good luck!
the design is very clean and simple but really effective and engaging
Love the design, but there are some things that i dont like.
First, the horizontal line that has a sort of gap on the left, i saw it right away when i opened the site and it keeps bothering me. Second, your image gallery is 4 columns and the text is 3 columns you should look at that and try to change it.
I very much like the design. Is clean, compact and the design of the site works well with the work displayed.
A couple of things I will change:
Very nice site overall, in my opinion with ha couple of fixes this is a great portfolio site.
Awesome thanks for your comments - I agree with everything. I was thinking about the underline on the top menu and I think Ill add this as the visual aid. The home link is also something Ive missed! Thanks again for your feedback, much appreciated
**The logo is fine. I would however make the menu links bolder and 2 or 4px bigger.
The images I would make the enlarge upon clicking using lightbox or a similar script which are widely available FREE
I would put some links or other content in the footer
Good job,
Did you post - that you are viewing in IE! - Shame on you Peter! :P
Increasing the font size is just a detail. Overall, the site is solid. Very easy to navigate. Great design work. Good layout... I don't think its necessary to have the Facebook/Twitter buttons appear on the rollovers of each thumbnail. The likelihood of someone "sharing" before they've looked is slim. Last detail, I was hoping to see a much larger image to appreciate the details.
That's a good point about the social icons although I'd like users to be able to share each seperate piece of work if they wish. Maybe I'll rethink that! Thanks man
I loved your clean and to the point layout. Everything is intuitive and navigation is great. That's how it should be. However, as this, I suppose, is a portfolio site, I believe you should have taken some liberty and throw out your creativity. Secondly, I think the pictures are too dense.
I hope you'll be using jQuery or somethin like that to increase awesomeness. Great work.
VSESH01.jpg - has a strong layout, and has nice visual balance. The use of whitespace helps the readability of the modules (but you should consider a larger font - or font scaling control) to increase reading ability.
vsesh02.jpg - illustrates the rollover interaction (which is a great space-saver, and is a great metaphor for drill-down to a detailed view of the image.)
vsesh03.jpg - needs some font correction for readability. The Twitter icon should be blue (versus black), to establish a greater call to action. If some key word in these content modules were put in color, it may increase the visitors ability to scan (versus needing to read each content module).
The download button could stand some color as well...
Nice start...
Hy Ben!
I liked your design a lot. I found it very clean and attractive. Nice subtle background. But there are some things I believe are missing.
You could include 'next' and 'back' for the enlarged versions in your galleries. In my browser (Firefox) the whole images did not show while clicking on the thumbnails, only on the 'Click to view' link, which is a little bit annoying.
I think you should also include some more information of the work you've done. Along with the title, you could also write a short summary on what it is about.
There is another thing that I think is worth mentioning. The 's' on your logo is almost unreadable. At the first sight I thought it was a 'g'. I figured out I was wrong only when I saw the URL address.
Don't take my comments to critical, they are just suggestions. I found you're design very clean and neat. But in general I think you could add some more information to the content.
Cheers, S.
Great advice
