Nice concept of swapping DVD boxes!

    Hi Johan,

    The concept is really innovative.

Visited the site, and my feedback are as follows:

    1. Design could have been more vibrant. When it deals with TV shows, you could make a banner showcasing featured boxes and stuff like that!

    2. The website starts with How Does it Works…no introduction or some other text. Better add some text to introduce

    3. Why login below signup? I think it should be on top, and not as Bold as at present. Make it smaller in a box, container! Similarly for the Sign up form.

    4. I could not use the rest of the features as there was no means to enter your site. How about providing a demo user id. Hey, am not in US and don't want to register unnecessarily - hope you understand :-)

    5. But whatever I can gather from screenshots, I feel, it's not very clear to me, unless you provide some text on every such pages which would help user to know 'what to do' and 'how to do'! Hope you agree with that!

I hope these points helps you!

    All the best, Johan.

    cheers Prashant

    Use text instead of images

Posted on Dec 07, 2010 at 5:38 PM

    Hello Johan,

The design is coming along. A few things I would do to improve some key elements:

    • The outstroke on the headings doen't do it for me. I would use real text, not images and take away that outstroke.
    • The h1 is hidden. Don't hide the h1, as I said before, use real text for headings.
    • The logo is not a real logo.
    • The text under the logo is also an image, use real text for this.
    • As Prashant said, Login should be before sign up. But also the fields and the buttons are too massive. They should be smaller and the steps on "How does it work?" bigger. Maybe just put the login fields and button at the top and a register button that launch the Sign up fields.
    • In the image s3.jpg I would chage the order of the buttons, "Send"on the right, "Cancel" on the left, you will get a lot of people clicking "Cancel" when what they really want to do is to press "Send".

    Jazz it up

This is a pretty neat concept but the site design does not particularly excite. I would suggest using a warmer color for the background and use cool colors for headlines. You have a few too many colors as well. You have the blue, green, yellow/orange and red/purple and it's a little overwhelming. You only have 5/6 colors total which is fine, but they are mostly very different.

For a site that is promoting box sets that you watch on a box, the site has a very organic, rounded feel to it. I'd step away from that a little bit more.

Typography needs a lot of work. Stroked letters are generally a bad choice, and this is a good example. The font you use in the headers also looks somewhat stretched.

Lastly, everything sort of feels like it's floating. Give yourself some lineage using your text and graphics. The current layout makes it feel like a grid of any sort does not particularly exist, and some elements run into the wrong areas. You need more division amongst your elements (but be careful, I'm not necessarily saying put a bunch of boxes/lines in!)

Content-wise I agree with pretty much everything that was said (reorder sign up/login; introduce the concept a bit better - maybe some marketing speak). The one thing I will add is that it feels like a very hard sell. The first line on the site is asking you to become a member, and the sign up is above login. It makes it feel like one of those sites that you register for and never bother going back to use.

    Colors...

    Landing page:

    1. The light blue background doesn't have any excitement or life. You need something that triggers excitement (think about the NetFlix Red - triggers an emotional response from the users). From a psychological standpoint, red stimulates the adrenaline (agitates - speeds up tasks and processes). http://library.thinkquest.org/27066/psychology/nlcolorpsych.html
    2. The outlined fonts "How Does it Work?" & "Sign Up" are difficult to read.
    3. The blue Action buttons work - however the green Tweet button looks like an after thought.
    4. The index of DVD covers works well. Users will also expect some pagination control (to show more selections)

    s1.jpg - Swap Screen

    1. Swap task screen seems a bit confusing. Try to start with a traditional pattern of interaction (accumulator pattern) to model the swapping task. (see uploaded sample).
    2. Make certain the fonts and the buttons are readable

    s2.jpg - Wish List

    1. Good design - but how does someone delete?

    s3.jpg - Mail to Screen

    1. Good design

Overall - good layout. Take a look at the reference site (http://patterntap.com/tap/collection/web-application) for look and feel guidance. Notice how designs are rich and contemporary. There are some strong examples.

    Good start...

A good innovative concept that might work. The frontpage serves it purpose but a more better presentation would be better.

Also, a detailed guide or presentation for how the system works would be great. A visual presentation is what I suggest.
