    Rocks or candy?

Posted on Dec 03, 2010 at 10:51 AM

I like the design as well and the colouring feels nice for a financial company, however, I can't quite work out what the graphic represents. You say they are stones, but they look a lot like candy to me (we have chocolates called "Minstrels" here in te UK and they look very much like those). I do get a vague impression of coins as well, which is good, but I think they need to be less glossy to not seem quite so playful.

Your idea of a small version with a stacked Comparativo de Bancos is a good one, but I think using just the initials will be too unclear and difficult to get right typographically.

It is funny the "candy" point of view. My current logo are two stones so when I see the new design I see three new stones but I am happy to know what an outsider see in that logo not having the stones in mind. You even see coins what is good so I will need to take that into consideration.

Anyhow, the stones don't say much about finance, they were used for another reason when the blog was just a hobby but now I believe is part of it. If you see candies or coins, it can be a way of changing the logo little by little. People used the old logo and current readers will keep seeing stones and the new ones can see coins if we modify it a little.

      Thanks for the advice

    Not much

Posted on Dec 03, 2010 at 9:22 AM

There's seems to be some push back from the group here on CF on this design, but I really like it. The rocks remind me of an abacus, and some sense of balance; the green and gray colors work well together. If I had to change anything, it would be to simply try a solid color version to look for layout adjustments. The gloss and gradients are nice, but how will it work printed on products where you only have a two color process?

Overall, I really like it. Its clean, fun, sophisticated in a modern, nostalgic kind of way. Go for it.

Thank you all for your comments.

I have asked to the designer for some modifications taking into account all the advices here.

Using another font for "de Bancos" Also using solid colors And Linking the strons.

I like more with gloss and gradients but it is true that black and white it would look better without them I didnt like the link of the stones, being irregular they look like more dynamic. At the end, my web is a blog and not a bank so it has to remain not so serious as a bank.

Do you like the new concepts? Which one do you prefer?

Thank you all for your comments and reviews.

    Think about black & white

Posted on Dec 05, 2010 at 12:40 PM

    Antonio

It's no doubt that this is a nice clean logo, however there are aspects to think about when designing a logo, and although your brief is thorough, you really need to think what this would look like if it was reproduced via a fax machine a couple of times!!

It certainly wont look like rocks, it will probably look more like some sort of piled excrement, and that could possibly be embarrassing...

So based on that, I would look at a more traditional way of expressing the balance...

Anyway, that's just my 2 cents worth, take it or leave it...

Oh yeah, I agree with you Aaran, and this was in my mind.

You need to have a logo which can be reproduced in any media, like Aaran mentioned, Fax, also in print medias, like newspapers, black and white, halftones etc...

Thus, gradations and such colors must be avoided in logos, I feel. Must be strong enough to impress without these fancy items... :-) What do you say?

      cheers

I am checking it in black & white, but to see the pile of things aaran says you also need a lot of imagination, i think my stones are quite rounded to be those things... :)

I need to think more about it. May be you want to have a look to the rest of the designs and comment about it, sorted by my rankings http://99designs.com/logo-design/contests/logo-icon-consolidated-financial-blog-58607?orderby=rating&filterby=

Ok If I were to choose, I would take #90 or #89... I think more than anything it's the font, a good logo, is generally made up of a nice simple yet target market appealing font. I personally don't like the stones, but that's just my opinion... Logo's with stones, have been done to death and with the color choice they are generally about landscaping, zen gardens, zen masseus or healthcare in general.

Really, think about the target market, wand what it is that you want to portrait, take www.anz.co.nz for example, it's a bank and they're symbol is of a lotus pose, this conveys balance and harmony, without 3 stones, and the blue there are 3 blue's but this logo works fine in white or black, without misleading what it is that they are saying, through their negative space. And as it is I am the only one, that feels this way, as I look around at all the other reviews on here, everyone thinks it's awesome... Just my 2 cents worth!

    I really like the Design!

Posted on Dec 06, 2010 at 3:11 AM

I like the Design of the Logo, but the idea, not that much, I will put some thoughts here hope you will find it useful!

The first thing you said you want to transmit is TRUST, well the stones doesn't give that feeling to me, it's because they are not balance, and they look like that will fall! And trust it's all about the balance you will find in to logo..Think and connect the rocks some why, make them look like you are in control!

Second the logo is too long, try to move the graphic above the text, that will do it!

But I really like the style and the design it's a great way now to play with the logo, also the font is cool and it's readable on white!

Hope this helps you and I really like it so far, but it doesn't give me that trust feeling, you know!

Design does Convey Balance... Go more modern.

Posted on Dec 03, 2010 at 4:53 PM

The stone convey a wonderful sense of balance - but, I'm not certain why one stone is green. The box around the stone could be viewed and "balance - constrained by regulation (which is a trust marker in the financial services industry).

Be mindful of the "meaning of color" in various cultures. For example:

When you're using Green: Bottom-line, be aware of the cross-cultural implications. green is perceived as - Nature, health, good luck, jealousy and renewal. Green does not do well in global markets. There are problems associated with green packaging in China and France. Green has been successful in attracting investors in the Middle East.

I like the type treatment - the kerning is perfect.

It would be interesting to see the stones super-imposed on a solid background. It may be perceived as more modern. One way of getting that "trusted financial" look is to use the font Bauer Bodini (http://www.ascendercorp.com/font/bauerbodt/) for the words "deBancos. You will find that the letterforms have wonderful counter spaces - and the serifs repeat the same balance as the stones.

    Nice work...

Thanks a lot for the rich feedback. The website is for Spain so green is a proper color (I think). I am also trying the solid background and the new font proposal to see how it looks. Thanks again!

    Nice logo, but....

Posted on Dec 05, 2010 at 7:33 AM

There is no doubt that the present logo fairly deals with t objectives decided by you.

The stones concept is really nice. And the color, green, which is ok with you in Spain.

My quick feedback is as follows:

    1. Way too wide logo. I think it can be made little less wider, unless really requiired.

    2. Why not try out circular layout, keeping stones in center. I am attaching one sample, not finsihed one, just to give you idea.

    Hope these helps you

    cheers

    Gradient

Posted on Dec 13, 2010 at 9:46 PM

I like the rocks even though is a bit cliche. Green works well with dark grey. I Would get rid of the gradient on the text and increase the kerning a little bit. Overall a good logo. Btw, the last exclamation has an extra space.

Make the rocks look more rustic

Posted on Dec 03, 2010 at 10:41 AM

Since new financial products are sometimes "raw" finds, I think it might useful to show the lower rocks in the stack as unpolished rocks and the upper ones (in green) as much more polished to show that you are looking for the best and most lucrative financial products for your clients.

I hope this makes sense to you.

    99 designs!

Posted on Dec 03, 2010 at 2:38 PM

First....this is quite possibly one the worst of the ones I saw from what you had to choose. Chocolates and a mint? I don't get how this has anything to do with banking.

Anyway..... anyone who uses 99designs' exploitative business model has my contempt. Specially to bring that to this forum of professionals who hopefully have not had to stoop to the role of dancing monkeys to make a few bucks.

Do you realize that potentially 99 people wasted many hours of their life's to compete for your "prize" and got nothing? and now you want us to refine it...... for credits?

If this is allowed in Concept Feedback this is not as serious a place as I thought

    • Antonio Romero

Another one, chocolates and a mint, I need to review this.

Anyway... I am acting legal and according to the rules of each site. I invested $300 in a conceptfeeback review some time ago and I got an extra $50 for these reviews. In the mean time I launched a contest in 99 with one of the biggest prizes you can see there. Then, I submit here the design in order to get some extra feedback trying to see some things I can't see, as this website is supposed to be.

I don't think I am exploiting anybody but being quite generous. 99 has rules and I followed them, only designers willing to participate, did it so it is fair. I am pretty sure that designers not winning the contest are also learning many things from those contests.

You could have given a fairer and more objective score...

Sorry Antonio. My review was unhelpful and crass. And you did not deserve to be accused in that way. Again my apologies.

You are right, you are acting legally and by the rules. It is 99designs who has set up a virtual sweatshop.

Please keep this in mind and try to find a good local designer, that you can trust and who will get to know you and your needs, who knows the cultural cues of the environment, language and culture that you live in to assist you in making critical design decisions that will work for your target audience. I am not saying that you cannot find someone with these sensibilities outside your geographic area but it will be difficult.

Crowd-sourcing denigrates and cheapens our profession, please try to understand that.

Thank you and again, my apologies.
