Your mockups are interesting.
My suggestions are as follows: (including reactions...)
Too Blue! Is there any other color you can think of or is it mandatory to use blue. Makes very dark appearance...uncomforting sometimes.
A web2.0 look! Try considering this priciple and change somethings, like rounded buttons, more whitespaces...etc

The background texture comes across as distracting. This is more of of a clean, simplistic, layout and the grunge background doesn't fit. A simple gradient would probably lend itself better. See attached (sorry for the shoddy selection) Additionally i think the links need some more consideration. The Star trek links are even a good example.

Hi!
Perhaps the "recent Thoughts" can be removed? I don't think that is a good position... And it will also be a little more "negative space"
Maybe just have the Twitter icon left aligned, and no text...
Footer:
Separate the menu and the copyright info... Menu left aligned and the copy right right alignen maybe?
However, nice design!

What's great:
- Color
- Contrast
- everything is above the fold
Opportunities to enhance
- Add some textural noise to the background (example - like stars)
- Make fonts a bit larger
- Where are the social media icons (missing an opportunity to share information)
Careful:
- Second level page (Portfolio) - be careful how many fonts are displayed at one time (if at all possible).
- Contact us: Place social networking icons in a footer area (Fat Footer example: http://patterntap.com/tap/collection/footers).
- Social Networking icons - make larger, eliminate the descriptions, there's need to label.
- Blog - good layout. Careful using blue text on a blue background (Recent posts area)
