Sometimes you don't want to change anything, but you want to point out what is really strong about a piece.
It would be great if you had a message board to link to for detailed discussion - or - a better layout/set of tools for inline discussions under a piece. Sometimes discussions here get quite interesting but the comment sections just isn't full featured enough for an in depth discussion.
It's not clear to me why voting a concept down costs reputation. Voting things down is great, incredibly intelligent spam filter. It may not be an issue yet, but if this site starts generating more traffic, it will.
I do like the look of the new layout, much more compact and scannable. You may look at re-categorizing again when the concept turnover is higher.
I should mention that overall you've done a good job executing a social media niche that is much needed.
Hi Aurimas,
I hope you're well.
The new site design looks great. I was thinking that it might be worthwhile to create an 'add to basket' mechanism so people could browse their genre and add the concepts they want to view more closely to the basket.
This would save us time going back and forth to the lists. It's not a problem with the lists now as there is not an overwhelming amount of concepts to keep up with. But I suspect this site is going to get very popular and in that case it might be useful.
I hope this is useful.
Kind regards,
Matt
Good idea. A customized filter is what you're referring to. Perhaps a way to filter concepts by, say, 3 of my top tags...
We're also planning on adding "next / previous" type controls to concepts if you want to just go through concepts and review them.
Thanks for your input!
I'd actually like to see a track this concept button. I find that I will pick a project I resonate with and track its progress and some times it a bit hard to see the tree in the forest when I come back to the site.
Kyle - we already have that. Add it to your favorites. There's a little heart icon on the right side bar when you're viewing a concept ;)
Yeah, just realized that and was going to rescind my post. Maybe next time I will actually look before I post.
I hope that there will be a way to list project titles in "Recent concepts" boxes. Now, we don't see it on the design.
Please don't forget about increasing slightly quality of compression in design previews :)
Does CF really need that BETA above the logo? IMO it's overrated these days...
Szymon - thanks! We were going to show the titles when a mouse was hovered over the box. Do you read titles when they are in a grid like this?
You individual page would show your concepts with titles, but for the main screen we were worried about real estate and ability to show more concepts on one page.
Quality is on our list, too ;)
A.
Interesting... Actually I don't pay attention to title at first glance. Hoovered title might be a good idea :)
Hey Aurimas,
Let me first say that the minute I started using the site I got hooked. It's a great way to share and earn experience and to improve ones concepts.
Here's what I'd like to change:
There is no way to see when a concept was posted or to set an "expiration" date. This would be very useful for time-sensitive concepts and also help clearing out / archiving the old ones.
An archive function for your own concepts would be also needed as right now the only way to inactivate an old concept is to set it private or delete it :(
I would like to see a star rating for usability (for websites in particular) in the concepts ... this is not a must but I think it would give us a whole new feedback dimension, and help us build better concepts.
I tend to be organized so I always stick to numbering my ideas. After the first posts I realized that the numbered lines are automatically formatted and make them more visible, like this post. Maybe you could share some formatting tips?
I agree with Craig, the voting system can make some people vote up only to get reputation and never vote down for the fear of loosing it. I thing every user should vote down regularly if he/she doesn't like a concept as I see few concepts voted down. There should also be a "5 votes down kills a concept". I've also seen reviews voted down (not mine but a few younger contributors) because the concept contributor didn't like them ... maybe we should have some posting guidelines here, and explain the term of "constructive feedback" :D
Regarding the "Bottom Line" issue ... I think it's a very important feature and should not be changed. It forces you choose a singular issue you would like to be changed. This is great feedback. I for one don't review concepts that I think all issues were covered by others or I can't say something relevant. If I like it I use the "People Like It" vote or I vote up relevant reviewers comments. Simply saying "I would not change a thing" isn't really helpful feedback in my opinion.
There is a issue with unreviewed concepts pagination. If you click next I get a "oops no concepts here".
Why is the box with votes statistics available under the user profile for everyone else except for yourself? I find it really useful :)
Your categories are in fact tags :). Why don't you call them this way and build some sort of a tag browsing system? Most recent tags, Tags with most contributions ... dunno this one should be thought trough.
That's it. Really good work guys. I already recommended Concept Feedback to some of my friends it's simply awesome :).
I just remembered something:
What happens when a concept gets updated? It happens to be a work in progress and the contributer makes a few changes ... will the reviewers be notified? Will the rating be reset? You should give it a thought, maybe in the long run you'll want to implement versions and rating for versions (like in the Apple App Store).
Some good ideas here and the version tracking should be very useful. We're keeping track of all these request and will be implementing most if not all as soon as we get some of the primary targets out of the way.
2nd the Version Tracking. When a concept gets updated I can't submit a new reply, only comment on another reply. Also I can't vote for the change.
I agree, all reviewers should be notified automatically by e-mail if a concept is updated.
I'm wondering if you could add some functionality to call out a 'designer' who posts work purchased/taken elsewhere? I see a design in a top area that was purchased from ThemeForest. You probably won't get a lot of designs that are ripped...but similar to spam, it should have a report or call out button.
Maybe :)
Really love the site. Great tool for a person like me who is the only creative in a land of cube-ies.
Hm :) You should definitely say that in your review. Make sure, however, that they're the designer and not the business person just using a template or having a template customized for them. :D
Thanks for the shout out Aurimas! no criticisms form me! I can't wait to see it up and running!
You're welcome. We liked the full width concept, but we need to retain the sidebar for the future.
I second the "bottom line" text change.
I am new to the site and haven't posted content yet so I may be mistaken about the features that are and are not available. With that being said, I'd like have the ability to link to past revisions of a concept and to link forward to new revisions.
I'd like to see a "Theme" or adjective category to help guide the designer/responder on whether the piece achieves its goal.
Any chance of putting user favorites on the side bar of a users profile? Stuck at the bottom it may get missed if someone posts a lot.
User favorites have been moved. Thanks for the tip - that place is much better!
I wish you could post more comments separately, not having them be a reply.
Here is what I don't like about the "favorite" system. A reviewer may track a Concept because they feel the Designer/Concept may need a lot of help. They would not call the Concept a "favorite", but would use that tool just to keep an eye on it. The Designer however would receive positive points because the Reviewer used the favorite tool to track the Concept.
If there was a "Track This" option in addition to a "Favorite" option then there would be, in my opinion, a more accurate process.
Of course I'll take this site in any form it comes because it is awesome.
Great layout! I agree this will be much better. I wouldn't mind seeing a section that displayed the highest rated concepts, or the most discussed/reviewed concepts. I see the 'Featured Designer' I like that.
Great site and much needed!
Ben - if you click on concepts at the top of the age, you'll see there's a little toolbar on the right with type of sort to be used. It has "active" and "popular". Both are what you are looking for.
ahhh thank you! Also, kind of on the same subject, an iPhone app for browsing and commenting, etc would be insanely awesome.
There have been a lot of good ideas pitched here. One thing I'd like to see is maybe a resource area, whether it's a list of helpful links to design blogs or tutorials or industry/business news.
I realize there are already tons of blogs out there for this type of information, but I think at least a little supplemental content would be a nice addition.
I really enjoy this website - it helps sharpen my critiquing tools.
For me I don't want to preview the concepts - i like to get an idea of what they are for then look at them properly in one hit - if you don't view them properly 'fife size' and with some idea of their purpose then you can end up criticising things that are irrelevant.
Please can we have an explanation of your ratings? Or maybe I just haven't found the 'help' button!
I'm happy about the new layout. Better to scan.
It's looking very good.
Maybe at 4 more thumbnails to the "recent concepts", that way you get 20 instead of 16 :)
Love the site, has been very helpful so far. Good to get constructive help.
Might be good if in the concept edit section there was a clearly defined update section. So that the concept is kept altogether.
And on the home page an updated filter such as unreviewed.
Hi Rachel, good suggestions. We're planning to have a way to "track" a specific concept and also send out updates when a change is made on a concept.
A version system and ability to see the progress of work on a concept will also be in place so theoretically will be able to create "Revisions" of a concept.
I like the implementation of the Featured Designer section and adding more thumbnails in a grid fashion rather than a list approach. Also I think the Top Contributor's section is a nice way to reward those individuals. Very good changes on the horizon it appears!
As a new member having only done one review so far (this being the 2nd), I was immediately aware of how small the 'Detailed Review' text input is... doesn't really match it's name in size. I know screen real estate is a concern, but even vertically expanding the box (if you're tethered to the current width) would help when writing a lengthy review.
I can see how people get hooked on this site. It seems like a great way to not only network with others in the same field but to learn and sharpen one's awareness. Particularly for those who don't have a team and need another set of eyes. Best of luck growing the community!
Thanks Charity. We'll def. keep it on our list of improvements.
I'll chime in since no one has brought this up, but I'm a little confused as to what the difference is between ACTIVE and RECENT concepts? I feel like there will be a large overlap in terms of the sites appearing.
If I'm wrong please correct me. Either way, as a regular user I'm a tad confused.
I also agree that "Disliking" something should not cost you a reputation point. That is ludicrous and we just end up promoting a culture of "being nice" instead of "being good." (Paul Arden quote)
I like the concept and every change you propose. The layout is elegant and clear and it's heartening to see you have discarded the separator squiggle which looks straggly and out of place. The new contrast of shades between columns is a more mature separator.
This is a drupal site, isn't it? I think it's a fine example of what a marvellous and flexible CMS drupal is.
However, there is one weakness which has existed from the beginning and is still there in this new design: the header. It is astonishingly bad. I wince each time I look at it. The contrast with the body is violent and disturbing. There are many sites which use this sort of header, it is a current fashion and sometimes it works well. But here I'm afraid it fails. It gives the whole page a disconcerting, ominous, louring, poisonous and sickly crisis. Aggravating it is the crush of detail contained in it. Far too cramped - it reminds me of the experience of the last gasping fish in a world whose oceans have all but evaporated. This is the only site on my daily viewing list that makes me anxious - and only because of that header. If I had Roman Abromovich's billions, I would bribe you a luxury yacht to change it. As I am all I can do is exhort you in the spirit of bonhomie and gratitude for an otherwise super site to rid it of this horror.
I like your passion about the header - we'll take it into consideration. :)
It's not a drupal site. It's a custom application on a .NET framework.
I like that it's easier to find more concepts at once, instead of having to scroll down.
Craig - inline discussion improvements are one of our top priorities. We are planning to expand this section, add more controls (links / styling - like in post concept area), and ability to upload images in comment section.
I know from my personal experience that sometimes I want to sketch something out on top of a concept...
The voting down cost is associated with people who might be mad at the world and will go through all concepts and vote them down. The cost of 1 rep point is really small - If I feel strongly about a concept, I'll post a review, get 5 points, and use 1 point to negatively vote it down.
Not voting on a concept primarily does the same - we are even thinking about removing the vote down. Or maybe adding a "5 votes down" kills a concept or something. Hadn't had an issue with spam yet...but we'll see.
Thanks for the detailed ideas, we'll def. keep it in mind.
