    Croeso!

    • I'm not sure about the 2nd graphic directly underneath the first. I'm guessing this is a carousel of images that rotate? It seems quite graphic heavy at the top.

      • Does the second graphic link to anything? I'm guessing this would be good for promotions, perhaps linking to a map or short description of what the picture is. The aim is that if the user sees a photograph of something they like, they can find out more about it.
    • English / Welsh language options - I'm guessing that options for other languages are not possible (French, Spanish, German etc).

    • The top menu differs from the menu on the bottom (no links to 'events' or 'leisure tour' at the bottom). I would advise making these consistent.

    • Social bookmarking (e.g., an 'addthis' button) may be useful. This way, if users come across something they like, they can send it to facebook etc. Do you have business requirements that preclude this?

    • 'Newsletter' box has 'text' as default content but would be better as 'Enter your email address here' or just 'Your email'

    • the 'Place to stay' / 'Things to do' box: I would imagine the things to do would be more attractive to new visitors - places to stay would come after. However, this assumes that users come here not having a reason to come to Flintshire.

    • The menu organisation seems to be well-done.

      • The top image takes up a lot of space where there could be information; however, the graphic is a nice draw and imaginative introduction.

I haven't got lots of time but I hope this little information helps. All the best!

      Hi Alan,

      Thanks for the great feedback.

Yes the images will rotate. Each will be linked, the example above would link to the published photo, but intention is (exactly as you suggested) that a particular location or event can be promoted through a photo and linked for more info.

The site will only be English/Welsh.

The difference between the top and bottom menu's was deliberate and those menus specifically have sub-sections, but I take your point about consistency.

I forgot about addthis... that'll definitely be on the pages of the site, but not 100% sure about the homepage at the moment.

Text was just for the concept. :)

Valid point on the Place to Stay/Things to do... I'll pass that one back to the client.

Thanks again for your feedback, invaluable.

    Liking the green

What works well in the design

    • Overall feeling of clarity, i.e. it seems very structured and it's clear for me where I can find the information

    What doesn't work well

    • The 'Place to stay' tab looks strange, also; don't like the rounded border next the the not-rounded border of the 'search' button

Anything that you feel is missing or suggestions on how to improve the design further

    • I'd just fix the 'Place to stay' because for the rest its quite good!

      Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your feedback, I had a similar thought about the buttons, I think I'll so more with them... they don't sit quite right.

Do you think the thing that's strange about the Place to Stay tab is the green background? I did originally have it without but initial feedback that I'd had was that the page was lacking texture on the white areas. Maybe I need to try something else in this area.

Thanks again for your feedback, it's really a great help.

      Hi Kurt,

      You're welcome!

The green background is indeed what's making it not feel right. I do believe that a simple light gradient from top to bottom (the height of the tab, no more...) would actually make it look more natural...

The design have to need lot of Improvement, such as

1.Maintain the vertical alignment of Search button compare with search text box.

    1. You use two (cloud) picture at your banner, but it would not masking properly.

    2. Use some deep green color at navigation section.

    3. Lot of unused space at your design , like that you don't think about design, you fill up the page with lot of information,

    4. maintain proper text align, & use some highlighted color at the h1, h2, h3, text.

      Hi,

      Thanks for your feedback.

I'm not sure I understand parts of it...

      1. The header actually made of up 5 photos, not 2, but as I put in the original remit, these are going to be changed shortly as I know they don't fit together properly, I just wanted to get some initial feedback as soon as possible on the overall design.

      2. A deep green isn't part of the brand swatch that I'm working to.

      3. I'm not sure whether this is something you like or don't like. There is deliberately lots of space between items, my remit was that the site shouldn't feel cluttered, and from the response I've had so far I think I've been successful on that point. Not sure what you mean when you say I don't think about the design... this 'is' a design... at every point I've though about the design. if you mean that it's not overly graphical as part of the design, then yes, and that's deliberate to keep the site clean and easy to read.

      4. I'm not sure where you're referring to with proper alignment, could you clarify? Is it the top of the pins? If so, this is deliberate as the first paragraph of text on the page will be editable by the site owners, and therefore may vary in length, as will the news items so it's to demonstrate that they will have this effect. Horizontal alignment should be right in my opinion. As for the h1, h2, h3 text, I think you make a valid point here... also, I think maybe certain key phrases could be emphasised within a paragraph using an alternative colour, so I'll look into that as well.

      Thanks again,

      Kurt

Good design - eliminate the scrolling

Posted on Dec 18, 2010 at 9:51 PM

    Great Flow

    • Photo choices are good
    • Navigation bar under top photo is hard to read. You should use a bolder color
    • Content areas are well crafted
    • Footer area is well designed

    Eliminate the long scrolling page

    • Try chunking into tabs, and presenting the tab set above the second photo.
    • Place social networking icons in the footer area.
    • Create more definitive call to action areas (like the Newsletter module)

Great site - I hope these design recommendations work for you...
