    Can't See Text in Logo

Posted on Nov 05, 2010 at 8:16 PM

    Hi Peter

it's hard to see the black text in the logo on a dark background.

Also if possible I would also tweak the timing on the copy fading-in and out. It struck me as a bit off. I think it would look better if the fade out started a second before the fade in of the new text.

I have changed the text in the logo to white colour. Take a look on the website http://www.maginnonline.co.uk to see the new live change(s)

    Logo, typography

Posted on Nov 07, 2010 at 7:11 AM

    Hi Peter,

I like the website, I think it works well for your business.

I see you changed the black logo on thr url of the page. You should align the "alpha dlc" with the symbol. I would try to make it smaller too and see if that works.

Also I don't think typography is very attractive as it is. I would remove all the dots. It doesn't look good to me. Also try to increase the size of the "We can" and decrease it for the rest of the text. I think you need some stressing and it would make the headlines more appealing.

Other things I didn't like is how the quote option repeats so many times. Especially how you have two buttons doing the same thing so close to each other.

Also work on the bottom table in the services section. I don't think you really need it but if you think you do - try to make it more appealing. Perhaps simpler.

Other than that, I like the design and the feeling of the page.

    Hope this helps. Keep up!

I like the clean design and the fact you changed the logo, though now the name is missing...

the main thing that i want to refer to is the layout - when looking at the current site, the bottom section of the about, more about, server status page (?) and social networks (share on , or find us on... this is unclear to the user) is below the fold, so the user doesn't even know he should be scrolling. this can be easily solved by reducing the top banner area and give even a "hint" of the bottom content on the above-the-fold area. i think that having a portfolio as a category is important, not only showing these sections on the services, and also, contact should be a category (not only showing it on the expanded toolbar) - the contact details, even just phone or email can also be opened and displayed on the page itself. if you have testimonials, they'll be an added value as well.

    make messaging tie to images

Posted on Nov 08, 2010 at 8:30 PM

Peter, you've done a fine job graphically. I like the whole site overall. It's clean and crisp and I think I get a good sense of the type of site you've develop for me.

Where the site is weaker than it could be is in the messaging and how the main messages tie to the images.

    1. "We can ... " Why the ellipsis? Why not just a statement? We can design, develop, and maintain your website.

    2. Content Management System (CMS) Full control over your own website. You went from a complete sentence to two incomplete sentences. Where's "We use a full featured CMS?" or something similar. The benefit (full control) and the feature (CMS) don't seem to tie together. And the website that appears with the CMS doesn't seem to be a site that is really using CMS in any way. Perhaps you could stack a few screen shots or web pages in a collage that would highlight using a CMS.

    3. Database Driven websites are ... easily accessible and updatable. Again, what's with the ellipsis? Now the feature and benefit tie together (in my mind at least). But again, the image doesn't show off a database driven website - I mean, perhaps it is, but what about it tells me a story. It seems like the images were all just picked at random.

    4. All websites designed by us are bespoke. I like this as a feature - but what's the benefit? You assume that your potential customer knows the difference between off-the-shelf and custom-made when it comes to website design.

    5. We are passionate about website design. This was my favorite in terms of mis-matched headline to image. Your headline is great - you're passionate. But the image is a laid back guy sitting under a tree. The opposite of passionate.

In your "about" text, you change point of view several times. First it's "we can design" so "you can" and then you talk about "clients" and not "you." Don't forget, although you are designing to a large audience of many, your visitor is one person. Speak directly to them.

Also, you say you design, develop and maintain. But you don't talk much about "maintain" and this could be a differentiating feature for you.

Thanks for your comments, I was thinking about changing the wording and will take your comments on the matter in consideration :)

The logo is not visible and looks amateurish

Posted on Nov 10, 2010 at 5:40 AM

Fix the logo, the background behind portfolio preview is nice, but add some gradient/border around it. Why do you show server status page without any other information? Do not say "About maginnonline.co.uk", people know where they are, have less text. The domain name is hard to remember/type in.

The logo has been changed since this posted concept so if u take a look at www.maginnonline.co.uk then you will see the text in the logo is now white, I still need to change the size of the logo as its big on the live site.

I dont understand though, why so low scores?

I think once people have clicked on the server status page, that it explains itself by "everything is running fine" etc ...

The server status link does not look like a link. If it is so important why not have a preview image of what the user will get? Or, why not move the status indicator to the homepage?

Low scores because the design is not "tight". This type of design has been done a lot and if I say visit the form page the form is "styled" differently then the rest of the site (you could code your own form script and not rely on external or at least style what is there). I have mentioned that the thumbs should be padded as at the moment it looks like it is part of the white space below. The site looks like it was done by patching a separate theme, logo and copy/forms. The same goes for your prices that are done as an image and taken from Excel or something.

      ...thus low scores :)

The contact/quote page form is external so thats why its different styling, but not by alot

The prices have been done in also a 3rd party programme as thats the same price grid used in our brochures, flyers, and advertisements.

What do you mean by thumbs on the website??
