    Portfolio page needs some formating

Posted on Nov 04, 2010 at 5:16 PM

I love the style for sure but I definitely feel that the portfolio page needs some adjusting. Also as far as using the site on the internet to gain new users through Google due to the lack of Content you can pretty much count that as not an option, but the direction your taking this will definitely be perfect for marketing yourself locally and through referrals.

The biggest suggestion I can make is on the Portfolio page. I'd really stick to a grid. I notice that the website area is broken up and the logo area doesn't seem to really follow any type of spacing organization.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your comments! I am going to try an image gallery plugin for the portfolio page.

    Work on the navigation

Posted on Nov 06, 2010 at 7:58 AM

    Hi Kari

I actually don't mind the look of your first page. Although the font with its mixture of upper and lower case is odd. I'm also slightly unsure about the colour scheme. it is certainly unusual. The black is very heavy.

Put your contact info on your home page. That is what a lot of people come to a page to find.

When I start to navigate it is a problem.

There is something wrong with the menu on the front page ... the highlights shift the menu about the place ... this is a classic error but not a good selling point. To be honest the highlights i.e. white bold are not different enough either ... better to choose a single highlight colour and use it though out the site ... your greeny blue or orange might be the best.

The porfolio page is extremely poor. I wonder if you could switch to a different background colour (paler) here ... like the inside of a book. There is no navigation. If possible try and keep your navigation on the same spot on the page. That is why it is generally up near the top .

Your graphic designs don't even show up on this background.

I don't think it shows off your webpages well. Rather than showing the whole page why not show a small portion of the page in and button box (a zoomed in graphical element) and then allow them to click through to the actual page or more detail page.

I think you have quite a lot of work to do here. Can I recommend that you redesign several options either using a sketch or a wire framing tool like balsamiq (easy to learn and they have a free 7 day trial). You can post them up here as an additional pictures for this review. This will allow you to be more fluid with this early stage design and let people give you feedback on a range of directions you might want to take. I am going to do something similar with my own portfolio pages as I am having a block.

Thank you Lisa for all the feedback. I hope to work consistently to improve this site, but you gave me some great immediate suggestions. Portfolio page... here I come!

      Hi Kari

I posted my concept up now (it is a wireframe). Good luck with the next steps.

I took your advice and did a wireframe for this site (finally). Hoping to do another one or two, but it's hard to find time to work on your own stuff!

Know what you mean ... have been meaning to get back to my own site for days! Will re-review this one shortly.

    The menu bolding is distracting

Posted on Nov 19, 2010 at 11:18 PM

The front page is simple. I'm always excited to see a website that tried to be something other than a super light background. I think the elements work together well on the front page, even the mIxed caSe. Unfortunately the menu has some quirky behavior. Rather than bolding the active element, what about changing it to one of your theme colors - maybe the light blue.

The menu is similarly distracting on the other 4 pages.

In general the site does what you want it to do until you get to the digital portfolio page. Again, the links for the three sites bold. That's distracting. How about changing color?

The snapshots of the sites themselves are a little hard to read. The logos are a bit hard to read. RCES logo really has trouble with your background. A grid would help. Or, since two logos are associated with the sites, what about site on the left and associated logo on the right?

Thank you for your comments. I am working on a new layout in response to how bad the portfolio page is! See my wireframe.

    Contact page

Posted on Aug 15, 2011 at 5:16 AM

    Hi Kari

I took a look at your actual website, which I like a lot. I think the simplicy of the home page is great and engaging, it definately encourages me to want to view other sections of your site.

Only thing I would say is that the contact page looks hurried and messy. For a start, I'd work on the spacing between the 3 input areas as it is lacking any consistency.
