    User experience improvements

Posted on Oct 25, 2010 at 10:24 AM

    Hi Gavan,

Your designs stand out here a lot :) Beautiful.

    Few user experience issues

    1. Order of the menu should be rearranged to reflect typical client path of interests (Like the homepage > do they do what I need? > what they had done previously > more about them > OK lets give them a bell)

    2. No slideshow on the homepage. It distracts from reading a lot. Instead have 1 big photo on every page.

    3. Next step button is the best way to have users follow the path you designed. It also requires less thinking on their part.

    4. Testimonials' samples on the homepage should have 1 sentence quoted from full testimonial (people don't read more) + link: Read more at the end + work scope under each name.

Refer to my quick mockup to see how those ideas look.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers!

    Michael

Michael. Thanx for the kind words, and taking the time to make a modified mockup! I really appreciate it.

The intention of the slider is to give a quick "preview" of each of their services. I guess there may be too much text for a slide show. Thanx for the suggestion.

Very good comment on the testimonials. Thanx a bunch!

Glad you like it. Please observe how you eyes will react on any site with moving slideshow. You will start reading something and the moment picture moves/changes you will stop reading and check the picture.

I completely agree on the slideshow issue. Strange how most UK retail ecommerce sites seem to be going with the slideshow thing at the moment (e.g. John Lewis, M&S etc.). Don't really get it.

I've noticed that site owners think like this: "So many other site has this feature so it must be the right way. Let's have it too"

    Like the concept

Posted on Oct 23, 2010 at 5:54 AM

The concept and the overall color selection is great. Like other have mentioned some improvements in typography might help.

Justifying the text is never a good idea. So you may want to avoid it.

Also please make sure that the blueprint image you are using can be practically made fullscreen, when converted into html code. Otherwise the whole design will ruin. So make sure, that either left and right edges fades into some solid blue color, or image is repeatable.

valid concern. The full graphic width is like 2200 px and fades into solid navy on all sides.. got it covered :D. Thanx!

    Parquetry colour

Posted on Oct 24, 2010 at 12:10 AM

Clean, simple, easy to navigate. Appropriate and stylish.

I would like to see the parquetry in a richer hue. This looks a little dull. Perhaps a touch more russet red into the brown would give a cleaner match with the orange.

The column text would definitely look better ranged left instead of justified.

The second line of the subheading needs more air and I suggest revising the wording to: Stellar's skilled craftsmen will turn your reno dreams into reality.

    It's a more positive claim, less self-centred.

    Hope this helps.

Steve, as for the brown, I already have 2 extremely stark bright colors in the color palette (the navy is quite rich aswell). A third would be perhaps over doing it.

I really like your suggestion on the change of wording. Thanx for that.

As for column text you are probably right. I usually use justified in my mock-ups so that it accentuates the grid proportions, showing the client it is pixel perfect.

Beautiful! But typography might need adjustment.

Posted on Oct 23, 2010 at 1:57 AM

Really gorgeous design, Gavan. I think your attention to detail is what makes this outstanding.

I love the choice of orange (definitely evokes "construction" in me... possibly because of my association of orange to Home Depot).

Your shadow under the slider is a nice touch and the layering details you've made in the header and footer wood pattern really lift this design into something more than just a simple 960 grid layout.

My only suggestion is to adjust some of the typography:

    1. The call to action could use a more premium font.

    2. The font weight of the 3 testimonial paragraphs are too heavy for my eyes, especially on the dark blue background. I think you might be trying to help them stand out more on top of the blueprint design behind them but it's fighting for attention from your call to action and is difficult to read.

    Nice work overall though!

    Buon design

(Sorry but I'm Italian and this text it's by google translate)

Really a nice design. There are many details and colors are very well prepared. The only thing I would do is raise few 3 names: Gavan Brown, etc ...

    EXCELLENT!

    Placement of contact information

Posted on Oct 27, 2010 at 7:22 AM

Great design! It does say contractor. I like the slider especially if you use it to highlight the latest projects. I also agree about the menu. If this mock is the home page then remove "home" from the menu it is not necessary. Start with Services, Projects, About, Contact etc. The contact phone number should be placed in the top header where the menu is.

I know they want to use the site to attract new clients so you don't want them searching for contact information.

    Nice texture

Posted on Oct 27, 2010 at 12:46 PM

I really like the texture that you have used. However, the wood on top seems to be a little too large for the rest of the site, try toning this down by making the wood texture smaller. The text towards the bottom would also look nice with some separation such as placing them in individual boxes.
