First off I would have a lot less orange text in the opening paragraph. Just 1 or 2 phrases is all, its too busy. I feel like the contact section is a little out of place and I honestly don't like those icons, I've seen those used all over the place.
It feels a little cluttered, some more white space could do this design some good.
I think the wording of the the 'click here if you are...' is way too wordy, and I don't know where that would take me (to see more work? contact page? services page?).
I also don't think you need the faded underline, it looks kind of weird and you dont need it.
Other than that its a great start.
Hi Daniel, I am going to be honest with you on this one. I hope you don't take it as me being mean :).
(1) Completely missing the point of minimalism in web design. I'm just going to give you a link to an article I wrote on the topic to give you a better understanding of what I mean, http://tinyurl.com/2cksbvm.
(2) Color scheme reconsideration. You should go to sites like color scheme designer or adobe kuler to help pick out one. This one is not working.
Those are the main two areas you should work on. Once you have done some work on them, I would love to take a look at it.
Cheers, Jamal
Thanks for the review and the great link! I will defintely have a look at that and see what I can do.
First off I'm a big fan of orange and black.
At first glance your page lacks structure, do you use any kind of grid to help you with the layout? You should perhaps have a look at grid based layouts, try the 960 gridder, or look at seminal works by Muller Brockmen.
Someone else mentioned the overkill of the orange buzzwords in your welcome text. Try and shorten this and make it punchier. Short snappy clever sentences beat down anything which is long winded and tenuous.
You have inconsistently used the orange streak under header words. It appears under contact me, featured work, but not under welcome???? Why.
Oh and you have white dividing lines which break up the sections of the site. I dont think you need the vertical one next to the contact details.
The portfolio images could do with some kind of holder, they seem like they are floating around, some kind of shadow, border could anchor them down.
The live website has a different layout to the one you have shown here. The contact me part on the live one needs some spacing out, padding, or something to make all of the elements more readable.
Back to the design shown here. Other work has a strange flow to it because of the lack of attention grabbers. Headers should be either bigger, be coloured, or have something which sets them out from the body text below.
I do like the light on the background and the noise/matt effect you have on the background.
It just seems to me like you need to pull the rest of the site up to meet the standard set out by your background.
Finally I think you should use jquery's smooth scroll so you can have some kind of navigation on the page. This would allow you to use more of the vertical space in the page. I would have a go at increasing the size of the featured work (since this is your showcase) and move the contact section down into its own area (perhaps below other work). This would give all of the sections equal width, fixing the anti grid layout you have pioneered here.
I'm looking forward already to see the next iteration of this design.
Surya.
Thanks for the great review! Sorry I didn't reply earlier, been busy the last few days.
I will have a look into the gridder system; I've always been intersted but I never thought of including it in my website. I agree with the welcome paragraph, I did it in a bit of a rush (hence it's missing the orange streak underneath the header) so I just highlighted what I thought were the key points. Thanks for the idea about the image holders, I think I may add in a border.
I have also just had a look at the smooth scroll and I love it so I will defentily try and include that in the design.
Again, thanks for the great review! I should have a new design up in the next couple of days!
Prior commenters have already hit most of the things I would have said; I'd second the suggestion that you cut down the amount of copy on the page (particularly the amount of orange in your first paragraph). You should also definitely make your section headers stand out more from the rest; right now they're small and dark and kind of blend in with the rest of the content.
I'm also bugged by the "Click here if you are interested in my work" button, which seems very flat compared to the rest of the site; either cut it our incorporate the shadow/gradient aspect that the rest of the site has so it doesn't look as strange and out of place.
Hope this helps; I'll look forward to seeing future versions. :)
The click here if you are intersted in my work button has bugged me for a while now, I just haven't thought of a good design for it. I'm going to have a look round now for some inspiration.
Thanks for the review!
Perhaps it'd be better to split the content into multiple pages. On the front page then make a collage image of the different images you have there. As it is it looks very busy.
I will of course have a mess around with different designs in the future. Thanks.
Hi Daniel, A one page portfolio is a great idea, but yours is lacking hierarchicy and white space between the elements. There are hardly any images on the home page which makes it a bit unappealing. Also, when I press the "contact me" button I actually need to scroll down to see the contact form - not very intuitive.
Thanks for the review! I will be changing the button to something with less text.
