yes, first thing, tagline below logo feels a bit.. dull..
very bold, and slick. :) would be great for a law firm type website.
hard to say because it got compressed a bit but i'd say it needs more details. some texture, or a tiled background are two quick ways to do that. maybe something as simple as faded diagonal lines tiling the top black area (where logo/tagline/nav is)?
one thing it certainly does is grab my eyes. when i was looking for a layout to review the first thumbnail i saw was yours it really pops out.
from a designers perspective i think the layout is great but needs more details to really polish it up!
i would be willing to bet that from a typical programmer / non-designer this layout would come across as very slick.
oh and although i am a big fan of white space i think there needs to be less white space between the top black header, and where the content begins in the center.
It just seems like the site is super long. The extended header doesn't look quite right. Slim this down, and bring the search bar up just below the nav to make the bottom of the search bar to be parallel with the bottom of the logo.
The featured image just seems to look plain. Add in a higher graphical slider and lessen the padding of the content below that to get rid of the blank space.
Great start. I see where you want to go with this. My main eye popper is that search field. IMO - it would go above the navigation and help to line up that header. Too much open space in there.
I'd like to see some functionality on that photo, add some arrows on the side to show its a slider, or 1,2,3,4,5, squares for navigation, etc.
The contact in the footer is too big comparatively to the rest of the content.
and last but not least maybe a more distinct headline styling, "an elegant, ... " bold, bigger,
Nice and clean though!
Thx Wayne, I guess the search was positioned kind off oddly. I now lined it up with the slogan and lined the menu up with the logo, much better.
I'll try and come up with a pager that doesn't annoy me too much.
I think most of your comments are useful and actionable.
Hi there, i think this fits your purpose well
What i like
What i would consider changing (imho)
Good stuff
Thanks, I might create a block style that stands out from the blackness that people can use if they need to draw focus to something. The overdose of white-space is the key element to make a design look up-market but maybe I've gone too far with it.
well i see the design is very simple and clean i have some notes like :
header space (height) is big and the search area should be more highlight than now
slider area should hace some arrow or auto slideshow ? the content layout looks good but main lines should have a featured font that catch eye and easy to read
sidebar looks simple and clean , footer looks very traditional need some effects to have life , may be main title be up and content more down it (10-15 px ) that will be good , didn't like gradient titles , need some css effects on links
that's all :D
As you said, the design is simple and clean. If I would add some live to any region it would become the main focus of the design, so I think there are drawbacks to spicing up the footer area. I agree the footer menus don't look properly centered.
Well I find it a bit empty somehow something is not right for me personally but i can not say what exactly. Maybe make the header more compact...
Thanks, there are some details that got lost in compression but some texturing might be helpful here.
I was actually getting bored with this design project but you got me motivated again, I can see how this design is unfinished until it's perfectly balanced in terms of white-space, balance and details. That's the thing with a minimal design, it will suck if you drop the ball on any aspect of the design because it's the balanced simplicity that makes it beautiful.
