The structure is good and the colors are nice but sorry that I don't like the whole feeling of the design, the text may needs more taking care of, and other elements looks too "default" to me.
Yes, one more thing: I am happy to know that you have rated the 'purpose' bit higher than the other criteria. This really helps :)
Hi Debashis
I am glad you are open to all sorts of criticism. The best designers, in my opinion, are the ones who can take the hits, not get angry about it, but see it as a sort of enlightenment. Sometimes other people see things in a light that the creator doesn't.
First off, I like that you've gone for a clean, simple, elegant layout. It's easy on the eye.
However, I feel your sidebar detracts from the design somewhat, mainly because there's just too much on it. There's two different search boxes, tags, several different feed links, several different menus including your blog, it's all a bit higglepiggledy.
Be ruthless, what parts of the sidebar do you really need? Is subscribing important? Which of those menus do you really need?
Ditch all stat counters - and you don't need share links on the sidebar. You already have them on blog posts.
Secondly, I take issue with your portfolio page. The work you have done is great, but you're not displaying it in a manner that does it justice. I would strongly suggest making the thumbnails links to a bigger image, and then turning the client names into links to the client.
I like your 99designs work, though I hope you don't support 99designs because speculative work is incredibly damaging to the industry, additionally I find issue with buying stock logos, which defeats the whole point of a logo being original.
Anyway, that's for another day.
So in summary, a nice start, but I would advise ditching at least 50% of the sidebar, keep the information minimal to go with the minimal design.
Your graphic design work is great - make this great too!
Hello Michael, Many thanks for your valuable review and also for your kind words. I appreciate your understanding on good designers' open attitude towards all sorts of criticism (may be bad) - till its not taken for granted :) I personally feel that unless you find the flaw you can't reach the perfection.
First of all, your points are very genuine; I came to realize that! I have done few modifications to the website like the feed links, subscription links, stat counters, other unnecessary links and to the search boxes. I hope now it is looking bit decent.
For the PORTFOLIO page: I have taken a note to modify them eventually, as I might be needing my viewers to land on my Behance portfolio directly by clicking the PORTFOLIO menu on menu bar. So I might get rid of the page I am presently having on my site.
About 99designs work: Thanks for liking my work for 99Designs. I don't support spec work - that's true and I agree with your point that spec is damaging the industry.
Michael, I have almost wiped about 50% of the unnecessary sidebar contents and tried to give some relaxation to the vertical scroll bars :)
Once again thank you for your great feedback. I have attached few new snapshots so you can have an idea by comparing the changes made.
Debashis.
One more point: Can you please check the Pic#3 and #4 for the FONT comparison? 1. Is it making any difference? Like whether to go with 'ARIAL' or 'GEORGIA' etc. 2. Do you think the logo placement is in the right place? Meaning, can you see the page with a hidden logo? 3. Do you like the name 'sereneblog' or do you have any suggestions for me to go for a new branding instead?
Thanks.
Hello Ying, Thank you for your review. I agree with your points. Perhaps, the fonts used is just not right. But I am sure that can be rectified. Please have a look at Slide No 2, where I have used a different font, i.e., 'Georgia'. What I feel is if you can have a look at the slide no2 then you may be able to compare the look and feel between both the slides.
May be, I have to switch from default Blogger template to my own custom made webpages very soon but as for the start, I think that the present Blogger domain might help me to get some feedback of the viewers before I can switch.
Beside the font, and other elements placement do you have any comments / views that can help me to get a clear picture of the site's look and feel? Do you think the background color might be preventing the viewers to show their interest upon the site? Or do you think I should hire a web-layout designer for the purpose Or should you recommend me to have a new name instead of "sereneblog" etc.
Hope, we mutually can discuss on this issues in next reviews by other experts at "Conceptfeedback" soon.
Thank you once again.
Debashis.
