    Footer underutilized?

Posted on Aug 18, 2010 at 10:49 AM

    Hi Steven,

No clue what the first reviewer was on about, if I went onto an ebay merchant's page and was looking for a specific hose, I'd want to see:

    • BIG IMAGES, so you know exactly what you're getting.
    • CHOICES, which you've done a great job with.
    • MERCHANT TRUST, don't know the rating of this particular merchant, but the quality statement says it all.

The only suggestions I have from my side are:

    • Make the Product description stand out more (kit/includes). Maybe invert the colors, so the font is red and 2 px larger?
    • Bring up Lifetime Warranty to 1st/2nd place or even separate into it's own graphic?
    • Use the footer. Not sure how much leeway you have with ebay in terms of URL's, etc. but I'd definitely throw in a link to one pager with testimonials from buyers, nothing fancy. Maybe even a bit about the merchant himself/herself.

Good job though, really like it!

    Cheers

    Noel

Hi Noel, great point on the kit/includes. I've always had the thought in lists that you should leave a good selling point to the last line, as that's what users remember, but the point is valid. I'll probably create a graphic for it instead. Testimonial idea for the footer is good, I'll give that a go. I always find it's quite hard trying to persuade buyers on eBay as you need to work around their layout and rules. Great review cheers!

      Hi Noel,

What do you think of the second picture? Updated it a bit after your review.

      Cheers,

      Steve

    Needs improvement

    1. Images are way too big. Make it appropriate with the rest of the contents.
      1. If you plan to use images, use it above your text "When you buy HEL brakes.."
      2. "Dont risk using inferior..." - do you think users will have time to read it all...on average, users browse the page for 40-50 seconds before they decide whether to continue or leave the page. So keep it short..preferably a one liner.
      3. Instead of showing big box for Hose Colors just display a small box with heading "Many colors to choose from" and show a dropdown with list of all colors.
      4. If the site is for general audience, avoid using technical terms like "LTSA, FMVSS-106, etc". That will confuse the users.
      5. Use button having text as "Buy Now" instead of "To order - Choose your hose color..".
      6. Display contact number, email address prominently for people to contact you.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree with most of what you've said. As mentioned in a few places this is for an eBay template, not a website. Thanks anyway.

Steven, you just can't take the criticism ;)

My bad. It didn't occur to me that I was reviewing the ebay page...sorry.

No worries, I would of agreed with you if it was for a website. I'm going to give you some credits as the points you raised are valid, just not for an eBay template.

    mostly ok

Posted on Aug 18, 2010 at 6:40 AM

This is mostly ok, however there are two things I notice that I would change.

    1. You have a box that says "choose your hose colour then click the buy it now button". I would move the hoses from the sidebar into that box. This will make it really easy to complete the transaction. Also if the hose text is clickable (and it should be) then underline the links and make them blue so it's obvious they are clickable.
    2. The second call to action has a different message. Do I click the buy it now button or click the hose THEN the buy it now? Confusion will reduce the amount of purchases.

Otherwise I this it's more than good enough for a page of this type - there's loads that are much worse :)

Good point on the second call to action, I'll have a play around with it.

    • I would recommend moving the color options to the left side as another commenter stated. Put the "When you buy..." box below the photo.
      • I don't see the "Buy it now" button. Does it only appear when you click a color? I would reduce the colors into a drop down box of sorts. Is color the most important thing or is making the purchase most important?
      • make sure the buy it now is above the product description.
      • maybe make the picture a little smaller and give it a border. Perhaps square it off and put it to the left of the "When you buy HEL..." content.
