Hi Ferdy,
Great design, it's definitely visually appealing.
Here's my suggestions:
I'll go through more pages and in more detail when I've got time.
There's so much I like about this site, so don't think all I'm thinking is negative!
Hope it helps,
Steve
Steve, I also appreciate if you mention what you like about the site. Not because of my ego, but because I want to learn what does work so I can learn from it as a designer and use it in other projects and in my way forward with this project :)
Hi Ferdy,
It took me few days before I found time to review your site. The funny thing is since the concept has been posted you improved it (more pictures on the homepage = good).
Let me say at first that you have created a cute site which is beautiful from graphical design perspective with perfectly working sweet gizmos giving instant gratification. Wow, really amazing level of craftsmanship.
I must say I like the idea as there are a lot of animal lovers around (myself included). That being said I'm under the impression that somewhere during development you got derailed.
My feeling is you wanted to create a site for nature lovers to view and share beautiful beautiful photos. Unfortunately you created a SOCIAL BEHEMOTH with nature photos in the background.
IMHO with a little redesign you could bring the initial spirit back and make admiring nature and learning about it the primary focus. This is what your target group really wants.
Another element which is not obvious for me would be your business model. It's not visible at this stage but I hope you have something up your sleeve :)
Notification bar should not move the whole page down because this is very disturbing for the users. I would make it on an overlay or somewhere inside the page closer to where the action was initiated.
System does not need to display notification to every activity like for example: 'comment added' as user can see this comment appear. There is more notifications like this.
Photo upload is a slow, tedious and not pleasurable experience. I would suggest redesigning this process to something more modern and user friendly otherwise the fuel for the website (photos) will not appear fast enough to keep users interested.
Hope this helps because I can see great future for a cute site about nature if user experience is improved.
Keep up the good work!
Michael

Michael, thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to review my concept in such detail.
Allow me to pick a few of your feedback items and respond to them:
Regarding the balance of social vs image viewing you make a good point. I very much agree that the photo viewing itself should improve and be more dominant. I'm working on it :)
At the same time, JungleDragon is also an experiment in reputation systems. I am experimenting with ways to make it rewarding and attractive for users to contribute. I even envision JungleDragon to have much more game-like elements than it has now. It is a vision I have and I may fail at it. I find games to be prime examples of engagement and am trying to apply some of those concepts to this web application. I definitely should be concerned with the prime objective of the application and its users, but I am also not afraid to try a few different things. By the way, I would really appreciate the redesign recommendations you have that would bring things back in balance.
I definitely need a business model, but it is too early for now. This is a pet project with a vision that is in an early stage. I am of course already considering business models (ads, reselling photos, prints, paid memberships, donation model, partnering with WWF or National Geographic). I think finding one that fits will be the biggest challenge of JungleDragon as a concept. Personally, I think it is on par with a site like Wikipedia, providing a service for all of mankind to enjoy. The trouble is, who pays for that?
Details
Duly noted. Although I see other sites doing it the same way like I do, I will check how it looks when it becomes an overlay.
Good point. I want to make more user actions Ajax-like, meaning it does not refresh the page and is instant. Voting on a comment is one such example, it does not need a notification each time.
It is already on my todo list to allow for multiple file uploads. Is there anything else you recommend to make it more friendly?
Excellent review, both flattering and educational!
By the way, in this blog post I announce the change you mentioned (more images on the homepage):
http://ferdychristant.com/blog/archive/DOMM-88CKUY
It ends with "Less non-sense, more photo viewing", right inline with your feedback here :)
Ferdy, "putting it back in balance" IMHO is not enough to make it worth using by people. Balance has to be shifted strongly in the direction of enjoying viewing of nature photos.
I really love this concept. As a photographer myself, I can easily see myself using this website a lot. The design is clean, the nae is great, so is the fonts, and I love the concepts. Only thing is that maybe you could think of a neater way to display the foodchain. Possibly a flow chart or something of that sort? Maybe you could make a cool design showing some bigger fish eating some little fish next to the foodchain? Just something to think about :)
Thanks for the compliments, Alex. I have big plans for the foodchain reputation system, this is only the beginning. I also want to introduce collectables and powers that are specific to the class of animal you are.
I would love for you to become a user. It is still only in alpha but you can help test it and have a chance to win 100$ in cash:

I'm always looking for additional testers and people to check out the concept :)
This is a very nice site, but the only thing I wanted to say was that the name is awesome ;) Good luck with it!
Thank you Noel, I'm quite proud of the name. I think it sounds cool and it easy to remember :)
the orange rectanlge can be dark green , the nav can be more sexy may be smaller and the header need a work out to get you the feel of the jungle may be some nice illustrations and i guess you need a logo too .
Thank you for the review. The orange box is only temporary for the alpha environment, in production it will dissapear. Good point about the navigation, will combine this with other remarks made about it.
As for the Jungle header, I am currently quite happy with it (also check the footer) but will await more responses to find out what the common opinion is.
hi,
first of all appreciate the color scheme for the design, alignment of the content and images. Looks cool with good color selection. Clean navigation and decent arrangements.
But I guess the site's look will get change when you change the monkey image from home page and somewhat or somewhere it looks un finishable. Otherwise cool effort. Keep rocks...
Thank you for your kind words. The main image on the homepage is not fixed, it depends on the popularity of images which one will appear there.
Can you please clarify what you mean with "un finishable"?
Hi Fredy,
Nice website and idea , i like the simple design . What i noticed is there is no where written what this site is about, it has purpose and a niche which is a strong point in my opinion, you might add a ligne under the "JungleDragon" that tells it.
Another thing would be to work more the menu on the top and the layout, my first impression when i saw the screenshot i was thinking it is a blog
Hope it helps you Good luck
hello i like your layout a lot, what i will change : - bigger logo - rectangular tab for homogenize the design (in the user interface screenshot) - smaller height search bar(juste a litle) - the reflection effect in the navigation bar don't work well maybe it will be better with only one color.
good luck-
Hello, in general I like this design it is simple, but as I'm guessing it was mentioned to be simple, the entire idea behind website is simple awesome and I love it! :)
Suggestions:
1) You have quite nice logotype, but there is icon missing, try to make some kickass dragon and add it before the Jungle Dragon
2) The menu section could be slightly improve try to remove the "gloss effect" add small amount of gradient to it ike 5% and inner stroke of 1px perhaps
3) Awesome dragon in the footer, but the text area in the footer section could be better.
In general I think there is not to much to change it seems to be quite done:)
Good Job!
Charlie, thank you very much for the review. Indeed, the idea of this design is to be simple, inviting and accessible. It is all about the content inside the design.
1) I did try this but could not work out a nice logo. Instead I opted for a simple type logo and the dragon in the footer. I will think about how to combine them.
3) Any suggestions on how it can be improved?
Thanks!
1) Maybe try something like, creating a square like a"frame" put a head of the dragon from the bottom of the website turn it -100% horizontaly and make it as it stick out from the borders of the frame - just idea
2) I also think that green hover on green background might not be best solution, but you know that is just my opinion
3) try to use same styling as it is in "search bar" currently it have some gradient/inner shadow that doesnt work best with the rest simplicity of the website - sorry for my bad english
@Charlie, your english is fine don't worry about it. Thansk for the extra clarifications, will take this into consideration. I'm collecting quite a list of tweaks to do from this site, that's great!
Hi Ferdy,
I love your site's appearance. The colors, the easiness and specially the footer.
But i think that the width is a bit small, isn't it? Instead of putting all these elements squashed in 820 pixels, why not to give it some space in 1100 pixels or more?
You also have to add a tagline to explain what the site does. The logo isn't explanatory enough.
Thank you for your review, Dimitri. The idea of the current width is to let it fit in small resolutions and devices like iPad, as well as laptops and desktops. I will consider giving it a bit more room to breathe, good point.
I agree with the tagline comment, another reviewer mentioned this too. Will implement it in a future version.
Steve, this definitely helps! I pretty much agree with all your findings. Be as blunt as you can be, I can take the heat. I posted it here for everyone to shoot at so please do keep the feedback coming. I plan to add many of the itmes you mention on my todo list and actually change them. I will await feedback of others before I start to work on a "fixpack".
