    Text Color

Posted on Aug 12, 2010 at 11:50 AM

It's has a nice feel. But here are some things that I believe could be improved upon:

    1. I use IE 8 with capibility view on, for most browsing. I also checked IE6 and IE7. There is an alignment issue. I have attached a pic for reference. I also viewed the site in FireFox the alignment is fine. But the question is the target audience - what do they use?
    2. White Background - I believe that the white background behind the text takes away from the flow of the design. With this being a site for a wedding photographer, the text should be fancy and elegant.
    3. Somerset, Dorset etc... - Why is this information important? Is this the service area?
    4. Text color throughout the site is too light. Make the text darker for readability, especially the blue text.
    5. The site lacks a style of elegance that is typically associated with weddings.
    6. Research - If you haven't already take a look at other wedding websites for ideas.

I like the scrolling of the images along the bottom. It is a very nice touch.

Thank you for the IE update, I'll sort out that coding issue.

By 'fancy and elegant' fonts you are referring to something that looks like handwriting/calligraphy? I think that is a bit cliche and have avoided them for that reason.

Somerset, Dorset is the service area and key for SEO.

I agree about the text colours, I'll darken them a bit. Thank you very much for your time!

    A few comments

    1. its nice and clean - but also a bit boring to be honest (sorry)

    2. the pedant in me would have the arrows and the thumbnail disappear on pages with only 1 image http://photography.designsessions.co.uk/weddings/6/4

    3. To be honest when i clicked on the scrolling images i thought i would be taken to a page were i could scroll or click through all the images not just be presented with a couple from a particular album

    4. font size on menu text is a bit small

    5. 5 I'd like to be able to manually scroll through the images at the bottom - i have the choice of painfully slow or stopped.

    6. logo is clean but a bit bland

    7. your client does portraits as well as weddings yet the homepage is the weddings page - what if i'm looking for a photographer to do a portrait and don't notice the little link at the top - header text should also reflect "wedding and portrait photographer"

    8. language of "I commit " on prices page is a bit odd - it sounds aloof - and for my wedding day i don't want someone who is going to be aloof and potentially rude. Make yourself sound friendly and warm yet professional.

    9. on prices page i want to see some examples before I part with £950 quid

    10. if alterbnative priced packages are available what are they? tell me or i'll find a photographers website that says £500 for the half day

    11. testimonials is plural yet you only have one, and i want to see a photo of andy and claire

    12. i know it opens you up to spam but i would like the email address on the contact page to be a clickable link - the choice of colour makes me think it should be clickable

Fantastic feedback thank you, I'd considered quite a few of your points and you make some very sensible suggestions. I'll make some changes, a lot of people have said the sight looks a bit too empty on the homepage. I'm starting to think I may have to go down a different route.

I really like the simplicity of your design. Everything is straight to the point and doesn't have any unnecessary clutter. With that said I think you could do a few things to add more interest and approachability.

    • I think if you added a very faded picture of a happy couple to the background it would give it more appeal without taking away from the minimalistic feel. It would help in filling all that screen real estate.

    • I really want to just be able to look through all your pictures on your portfolio without having to keep clicking on the link at the top. To be honest the individual album thing has always kind of annoyed me.

    • Your prices page doesn't really tell me much. It would be nice if there was some kind of description under each of those things listed, or better yet some examples of what you're talking about.

Other than that I really didn't see much else to be improved upon. Nice work.

Overall, you definitely have the right idea. I think portfolio sites should be to the point. Here's my work, you like it or you don't. That being said, there still needs to be something that makes it pop. I would try changing the colors of the text a little. If anything, they need to be darker for sure. But try to find somewhere to add just a hint of color to liven it up a little. But so far, you're off to a good start!

Thank you Craig, I've been playing around with colour and strengthening up the design... I'll upload a new preview for you to see. Let me know what you think!

One other thing I noticed while looking over your site. You should add overflow-x: visible to the body in your css. This will make the vertical scrollbar visible at all times and keep the content in your header from jumping over 10px when you go from a page that has all it's content "above the fold" to a page that has content below the break.

By the way I think you were looking for overflow-y:scroll ...

    too much spare

Posted on Aug 13, 2010 at 8:22 AM

It's elegant, but perhaps needs a bit of color or surprise in the design.

In the 1st page -- you mentioned these were sample pictures -- it looks like you're exploring dynamic combinations of scale, compostion and point of view in the line-up. Additionally, try including a few black & whites & color-saturated images.

The "two stripe" design of the featured page appears bland -- could the pics be a jumble of different sizes with a thin ribbon of stripe behind -- currently the weight of the 2 stripes plus the weight of the two lines of text create a sameness.

The web-page with the vertical pics is more dynamic. My criticism on that page would be to move offkilter a bit to the left to integrate better with the logo/menu.

The earlier incarnation has a name/logo versus just the logo. I prefer seeing the name/logo because it adds a touch of the personal.

Right now the design is spare spare spare, which works for wedding -- but I'd like to see more explosions of busy to balance the design. The busy elements could be very subtle>> For instance, one could incorporate an intricate William Morrisian (or some other thick-packed, abstract imagery) design in your white or grey background in an almost-same color. That would add impact without interfering with the minimalism.

Hi Betsy thanks for the feedback, a couple of questions though...

By 'spare' do you mean sparce? or space?

And who or what is William Morrisian? I've googled it but nothing came up...

I agree with you about the black and white, when it comes to filling the site with its true content we will explore the possible different images we can use. Thanks for your time.

Yep, by spare I mean sparse -- personally, I like my minimalism with more texture. William Morris, arts & crafts textile designer. here's an example of WM images at deviantart.com... http://reb70.deviantart.com/art/W-Morris-Wallpaper-Pack-II-74858175. btw, deviant art has some great (& mostly free-use) wallpaper patterns/textures. I really like what you're doing on the site. be interested in seeing the finished product :)
