    a few things..

Posted on Aug 02, 2010 at 3:56 PM

please try different sizes of photographs and a different grid structure- a few of the photographs could go even bigger - right now everything is kind of the same.. the image of the couple is grabbing bit too much attention.. that is way too much closeup for what u have here. The baseball image could go to the right, otherwise it is pointing towards a dead-end (horse image is a good example). - so try rearranging it a bit more and go wild with size difference.

i would prefer to see at-least ur name on front side, also try to use the red u have at back somehow used on front too.. otherwise both the sides would look entirely two different worlds.

with just the photographs up front, you are highlighting the fact that you are a photographer, web designer part is really not emphasized. i am not suggesting to include screen-shots of your work- rather this is just to caution you that you will be trusted more as a photographer than a web designer looking at this business card.

      Hi Abhishek,

Thank you for the feedback, I agree on many of the image alignment comments. As mentioned in a previous comment, I may try to do two cards. I've tried merging both but I'd be spreading myself too thin.

      Cheers

    possibly images?

Posted on Aug 02, 2010 at 9:10 AM

So your business card is either really good or okay depending on what clients you will be trying to attract.

For example, if you are mostly a web designer and that's mostly why you will be passing out your business card, then I'd reconsider the design to maybe one really good picture as a background shot and then some cool slogan or something as the foreground. Why this? Well it does show your photography skills by the good picture, it's just not the focus like it is in this business card. Adding the saying/slogan will provide some credibility in your experience with marketing, which is mostly what web design is all about :-)

If you aren't primarily a web designer and focus more on photography, then it's completely dependent on your target audience. Most photographers I know tend to do wedding/engagement photos (but then again I am 25 haha), and while they do the really good landscape/nature shots on the side, it's not what brings in the money for them.

I'd take a look at the pictures you are providing and see how they relate to your target market. The idea that these pictures might start up conversations will work all that better if the pictures are actually of the content the clients desire.

Which ever you are primarily, I'd also have that as your first title, which is why I'm confused because you seem to be marketing your photography, but have web designer first.

Anyway, I like the idea and if you left it as is right now, I'm sure many would be impressed, just trying to help direct your talent! Great photos!

      Hi Ryan,

Thank you for your feedback! All valid stuff, I'm actually thinking of having two types of cards depending on the sort of people I meet; mosaic for the friendly clientèle and for more web-centric / professional sort, a corporate card.

      Cheers

    Images

Posted on Aug 04, 2010 at 10:39 AM

Hey Noel, I really like the idea of the card, the images would be a lovely conversation starter.

My only concern would be the quality of the print with so much imagery. I am wondering whether a digital print would give you a good enough quality on the photos.

If you are having them printed old fashioned style on a press they should be OK. Might be worth checking with your printer.

    Nice work

      Hi Steve,

Valid point and thank you for raising it. I'm thinking of going with standard UV Cards that go up to 400DPI. I'm going to e-mail the provider first to see if they have any comments regarding any possible challenges in quality.

      Cheers

    Change the photo side

Posted on Aug 02, 2010 at 8:59 PM

Noel - great job, the bottom part of the cart is great. Nice typography, strong bold colors, good layout and clear message. Nothing to change there.

The front - I would use your little icon and create a pattern which I would then do either letter press on, or a layer of gloss on top just for the red part of the icon. I would also probably work with the colors and change the colors of the icon across the front...

These guys use patterns in a lot of their work: http://www.logoorange.com/company-logo-design-1.php

I had another link which I can't find for the life of me, but it was a sample of some of the top corporate design firms where they show everything from business cards, to letterheads, patter use in interior design of their offices and more... maybe someone has it bookmarked. It was on smashing or abduzeedo - I'm not sure.

Anyway, a pattern or texture will do wonders for the other side of the card and will be timeless and classic, no matter where or when. A business card is not the medium where you can effectively show off your photography, and especially good photography such as yours.

Btw - are you on flickr?

      Hi Aurimas,

Thank you for the feedback, it's always been helpful :)

Great idea on the repeating pattern. I still really want to give this concept a shot so I'll print out a couple hundred, but at the same I'm realizing the need for a more professional / general purpose card, where your idea fits in perfectly. I'm going to play around with it and come back with a few ideas. Thanks a lot for the links, I hadn't seen the logorange page yet!

I'm by all means on flickr, hit me up, just uploaded some Bali pics the other day (can only recommend that place)... http://www.flickr.com/photos/noelinthebahamas/

      Thanks again,

      Noel

    I totally disagree with @Melissa.

I think the photos are very interesting and it is an excellent idea if you can get the card printed with good quality.

Personally, I would make the front the information side and the back, the photos. The information is the most important part of the card, it shouldn't be on the back.

That's pretty much it, fantastic design. It is unique.

Alright, people are saying that its too busy, try reducing the amount of different photos. Just make the photos larger.

So instead of 15 photos, try 10.

My main problem with this is that when printed business card size the pictures are going to be the size of my pinkys fingernail....

very true... as i said, just keep reducing the amount of photos and increasing the size until you get to a point where you can easily focus on each image.

      Thanks Justin,

How can you tell which side is front & back on a card? ;) Not sure which direction I'm going with yet, but I'm still leaning towards the smaller images atm (possibly 50% larger).

      Cheers

    Not so many images

Posted on Aug 02, 2010 at 2:54 PM

I like the idea, but I do agree that it seems a bit busy. I would try running off a copy and seeing it in a physical form.

If it is to busy, try reducing the number of images and increasing the size.

    Looks great!

Thanks Dan! I actually had run a print and was quite content with it all (thanks for bringing it up), like mentioned above, might go 50% larger, but still giving it a few days though :)

    Hi Noel,

Great photos. However, placed together, they are quite busy really. I cannot concentrate on a single picture - except the girl with the flower on her ear. And the size are quite small: I cannot tell what is the bottom left image. The beautiful sunset over the sea photo also slightly blend into the sea with the couple in it.

If I might suggest: Have less photo. Vary the photo size, bigger size for the ones that you like to be the focal point. Don't put sky and sea on top of each other. Have color palette if possible (e.g. blue and orange, or black and white).

I love your company logo by the way.
