Nifty tool! One or two suggestions...

Posted on Jul 13, 2010 at 5:10 PM

I am not a user interface expert, so these are just my thoughts:

My instinct is to click on the ABC button, but on your website it activates on mouse-over. And at the moment, the hover activation area is too large (using Chrome), so it makes me wonder just what did I hover over to get the menu?

Could it be possible to add either a click action, or a delayed hover? Also, can I click anywhere in the big grey sample menu to get rid of it? Its really big to simply move the cursor out of it.

Oh ya - make the "Sample" cell wider and the "Reset" cell narrower.

Other OCD nit-pickings are in the image notes.

    Notes Added to Images   View

    • TypeTester.png
      • 1Change to "Sample Text Strings"

      • 2Remove

      • 3Change to singular

if there is only one font name being displayed

      • 4Change to "CamelCase - AaBbCc"

      • 5Change to "Numbers - 12345"

        or alternatively "Digits - 12345" ?

      • 6Shorten to "Random"

      • 7Change to Sample Text Strings by Language

      • 8Size to fit

Remove the divider (or make it so it doesn't connect at the top and bottom) and change "fit" to "Size to Fit:"

      • 9Make a little smaller

agree about the hover, it should be attached to only the "abc" button, or eliminated entirely (although I prefer the hover, and clicking does not interfere with the functionality)

also agree about note 3, except I'd go singular all the time... drop the s from font names.

Megan, thanks for all you notes. Most of them we will implement during the next update.

    almost perfect

Posted on Jul 13, 2010 at 5:16 PM

I've played with this for about 15 minutes now and honestly I can't think of much that I would change.

    Just a few minor thoughts:

    1) I didn't really get the foreground/background color immediately. I might try using either a Photoshop type overlay or using the "T" like Illustrator. Not a huge deal though, worst case is they try it and then figure it out, there's always a reset button!

    2) Not a huge fan of your reset button graphic, just not what I think of as reset (I must like it... now I'm really nitpicking)

    3) The "Fit" check box should be in the same section as the font-size since it is directly related.

    4) Some hover info -- "foreground color" "background color" "extend font to full width" "use slider to change font size" etc on hovers would be helpful.

    5) Maybe consider eliminating the "fit" for some of the longer text samples like lorem ipsum or grand canon since they aren't really of finite length.

    6) Add an "English" to the language one?

    Simplify

Posted on Jul 14, 2010 at 3:46 AM

    Hi Tomas.

You have some neat tool over here! Really helpful.. but I would like to share with you some tips to improve it:

    1. It took me a while to understand how to show options panel or how to show previews. It could be just me who thought it was confusing, but I think I would simplify it with a button that I could click and it would show/hide options..
    2. Fit option should be associated with Font size. If they interact with each other they should be close.. as they are now I thought they were independent.
    3. Choose another color icons.. background color and text color should have different icons to make it simple for the user to choose.
    4. I would change Reset icon.. it's seems to me that it doesn't belong with the rest of the layout... maybe something simpler..

Overall you have a fantastic tool over there! with a simple adjustments to make it more simpler and intuitive for all users it could be even better! Congratulations.

Points taken. I wanted to avoid clicking for the options, since it would be faster for the user to select different samples and avoid multiple clicks. We are going to select more appropriate icons as well.

    Hover area is distracting

Posted on Jul 15, 2010 at 8:50 AM

I had a play with this on the actual website and I found it quite distracting. I tried entering text and would move the mouse slightly to the left after entering the text and found that the menu would appear, so I then wouldn't notice the text I'm typing appearing.

Also, the first time I loaded the font with some custom text it took a while for the text to appear. After that it was within a fraction of second from me changing the text.

Is it worth an updating anim appearing, discreetly, either in the right of the text box, or top left or the output graphic?

    The space on the right

Posted on Jul 14, 2010 at 3:00 AM

Good job with this tool, I like it a lot.

I don't like the space on the right next to the reset button, it's not a big issue but you could try to center the reset button in that space.
