    Sizing & Typography

Posted on Jul 10, 2010 at 1:41 AM

    Hi Atanas,

I really like where you are going with this. The textured landscape is eye-catching. The clouds are a neat touch.

Where your design needs some help, I think, is in making the main content area mesh better with your background. The content also needs to serve you better in terms of promoting your services and persuading potential clients to work with you.

    Here's some suggestions:

    1. Size: Currently, the main content area is a little too small so the content suffers for it - I'd consider making this bigger. I'd also suggest increasing the font size to 11px or even 12px for easier readability. My eye was constantly wandering off to look at your lovely background. The content area should be the focus, using the background to draw the user in. Thus, I'm not sure the bright green gradient and mechanical fusion works well. I'm not quite sure what the shape is supposed to be (a sign post or gun)? I think you can do something really creative here - experiment with different shapes to make the landscape+aesthetics meaningful to your creative vision :)

    2. Typography: There's a lot of different fonts going on on the main page (4-5?) and I'm not sure they all work well together. I'd pick 2 or 3 and play around with them. The navigation font isn't working in your favour. I'd suggest changing it to something more readable. The logo also needs some help as it looks like it should be reads "works Sen." I like the font you used for "Sen."

    3. Re-work the portfolio slider: The thumbs are so tiny and don't speak much to your lovely work. I'd make the thumbs bigger and choose more inspiring snapshots to entice users to click on the links. Looking at your artwork - you've got such a beautiful style. I would LOVE to see it play out more on your website.

    4. Promotion and Call to Action: If you are using this site to showcase your work and attract potential clients, then I'd suggest adding a page that describes what you do and how to get in touch with you.

I'm looking forward to your next version. Good luck!

    Cheers, Serina

Thank you, this was a very helpful review :). I think I'll rework the foreground completely, and perhaps I'll make it a single-page layout. It is supposed to be a sign post, but I'll probably give it a different look, and more space for all the functional elements.

      Thanks.

    Increase your body content area

I think it's a good idea, but there are some definite areas of improvement. From visiting your site, I can see that your artwork is fantastic! Extremely detailed and concise. I love it. Why not integrate some of that handiwork into your next site design? I included notes for this site below. I'd love to see the next version!

    Notes Added to Images   View

    • sw_website.jpg
      • 1Necessary?

I don't know if this is really necessary to have here. Is this your mascot or logo? I don't see it adding to the overall viewport of the site. It's taking up space.

      • 2Gorgeous

I think this backdrop is well done. Is this one flat image? One way to add a little bit of dynamic quality is to have these individual color elements floating on different CSS levels with some fixed and some scrolling.

      • 3Nix the superfluous "futuristic" elements

I can see the look you're going for here, but it's making the page too "artsy" and not enough about your work as a designer/developer.

      • 4Viewport should be larger

Try bumping up the font size to around 13 or 14px (1.3 or 1.4em) and increase the size of this viewport for better legibility.

      • 5Add to navigation

I'm guessing these links are for your CV, a contact link, your portfolio, and your Twitter account. Your CV, contact link, and portfolio should be in your navigation so people can easily find it.

      • 6Not sure about this navigation style

I feel like this should be bolder and stand out more; with the angles and the small viewport, this could get lost here in the top right corner of your content area.

Thanks, I will have these things in mind when I'm redesigning it. At the moment I have to focus more on the black and white design...

The background is made up of 3 images - two for the upper half (repeated horizontally) and one for the grass (also repeated). I also have a small texture image for the grass.

hey nice work here. i have a few comments and ideas to offer. i like your scene, and the character is nice.. it reflects your work well. i think only a few adjustments might help.. like the icon at the bottom for "see some of my artwork" it doesn't fit in the set of icons.. see how the others are isolated symbols centered by emptiness? could you put a little drawing in the middle? like a little figure or something instead of the fully filled cropping box effect, or four sided bleed... that you currently have.. ? not a big deal if you don't change it but i think it would help.

the biggest cloud moves too quickly and in too obvious of a zig-zag. grass shape is noticeably repeating.. overall you have nice colors throughout.

would it be possible for you to incorporate a scroll bar into your small content area here, and put your CV into the frame instead of opening a new window? and i hope you get a chance to translate some of those beautiful comics into english. i really like the grey buttons on the left of the graphic novel site. your drawings are amazing. keep inspiring us :)

beautiful site. very simple and memorable.

Hi, thank you for commenting ot the design :).

I could make the CV pop up in a lightbox, but I'm don't think that would help in any way. More generally the problem is that the content area is very small - and I can't put inside all the thinks I would like to.

Glad you like the graphic novel :).

      Thanks.

    sizes and typography

    Hi Nasko,

I Basically agree with everything Sarina said

Definitely think about size and typography changes!

I would like to add another thought:

I don't think this concept suits you as an artist. Your illustrations are awesome and you should consider focusing on them a bit more - showing what you can do, what is it that you stand out with.

One idea is you can apply them to your design - you can think about using the same style as the "see some of my artwork" button.

Another thing I would do is I would rethink the high-tech elements. They are very old fashioned and don't go well with the color theme and the textures.

I love the colors and background!
