    a few things..

Posted on Jul 08, 2010 at 2:51 PM

clean corporate look.. i guess this is what you want to portray. however, i am not sure how this would work for a freelance designer - good for a company site but usually for a designer, site look and feel is more 'personal'..

"I provided interface design services for a Microsoft web application project." you have this with Microsoft logo- adding a Microsoft logo as a first item in your portfolio could be very impressive but again, if it is not done for Microsoft (as a client) but for a project which uses Microsoft web application technologies.. I'm not sure how this would impress a potential client. - but again, this might work.

I'm trying to avoid the whole fuzzy "Hi, I'm Yuriy, I'm a web designer" as that's getting horribly old. My niche is small business design, so I'd like to keep things as clean as possible.

Microsoft was a client, so I'll definitely be keeping them in my portfolio.

      Thanks for the feedback!

    text areas

Posted on Jul 08, 2010 at 3:16 PM

I like it quite a lot. However, the menu links could be moved a little bit down, closer to the wide image and on the same height as logo.

Also, those three text areas look a little bit too wide.

I wouldn't Microsoft logo on the homepage - it looks corporate'ish and some people might not even believe you've actually worked with them and think you're trying to trck them;)

I'll play around with the menu links, that's good feedback.

Lol the point of a portfolio is to show who I've worked for, they don't have to believe I didn't design for Microsoft.

You were right about the links, I'll post up an updated version of the site soon. I've made a few tweeks.

Feels like too much on one page

Posted on Jul 08, 2010 at 3:50 PM

Hi Yuriy, I think you have the elements necessary of a strong portfolio site and I can see from your previous work that you have talent and good experience. However, the vibe I'm getting from this design is not good for a portfolio site. Here is what I think will make it better:

    1. Make your site clearly understandable. You seem to be going for a minimalistic one page design, which is cool, but the average user will get confused the first time visiting your site. If you want to keep this concept for your home page then add some labels for the different sections. That way, potential clients won't be steered away because they feel they can't understand your site. Also, I feel that your work should be separated from your homepage for better clarity.

      1. Try to look less corporate. I feel you just making the shift from studio to freelance is the reason you are having this problem. You should go think of ways it can be made more personal about you because to me this feels like the homepage of a studio, rather than a freelancer.

Overall, I do like this design. It has a good layout and good work in your portfolio that shows your capabilities and diversity. Just work on making it more personal and less corporate. Hope my feedback helps :).

Thanks man I appreciat e the detailed review. I've updated the site, take a look and let me know what you think.

Any advice on what I can do to make it a little more personal? I'm really trying to steer clear of the

super personal vibe alot of freelancers are giving off lately, and am trying to go for a more minimal look, but I definitely don't want it to feel cold and corporate.

Regarding clarity, do you think I should just make labels for the services and portfolio? I've swapped out the filter div for the services headers becoming the portfolio fitlers.

Hi Yuriy, removing the filter only adds to the problem. I would keep the filter, but instead put the word Portfolio in it. Maybe where filter is. That will solve the clarity problem I mentioned. Also try a smaller font in that section, just a thought.

Forgot to mention try changing the info link to an about link. It is more common and you naming the section of your site where you describe yourself as info may throw some users off for a minute.

      Changed the about title.

Before I add the filter again, take a look at the site again. I added tooltips to the service titles... Think It's still too much?

I like the feature put not too many people will probably hover over your service titles, let alone expect something like that happen. It is a cool feature you have added to an already nice plugin, put adding the filter bar will be best for the average user that doesn't take time to look around sites for features like that.

I don't have much experience in designing one page layouts, but it feels good to me.

    Drop the column icons

Posted on Jul 08, 2010 at 8:01 PM

    Hi Yuriy

I like where you're going with this. I think it's a huge advance over your Trident site/identity/positioning.

If I understand correctly, you're appealing to local business people as your primary audience? If so, the clean minimalist look is a good one. It says efficiency, effectiveness, no-nonsense. Good things for small business owners.

I have a few minor suggestions.

    1. Lose or replace the icons sitting alongside your headlines. The style does not sit well with your overall clean look.
    2. Move the three "confidential" samples to the bottom of the portfolio. They all say "big business" and if your prospect is a local estate agent, not what he wants to see.
    3. I guess the panoramic pic is of the city where you're located, but if I don't actually live there, how would I know? It's a bit "big business" as well. Not sure what to suggest, but if you want a landscape feel, try a streetscape. Shoot from ground level, capture a few landmarks and include some people.
    4. Drop the words WEB & from your descriptor and make it simply Brand Design. Web design is brand design, so it's superfluous. The use of your own name gives it personality while also giving you a perception of authority.
    5. Revisions to text: Column 1. Your website will look great, load quickly and be easily found by search engines. Column 2. Without a distinctive identity, your business will not stand out from your competition. Let's talk...etc. Column 3. The web is a powerful advertising medium that can turned to your advantage 24/7. Use it.

Love the logotype and the austere blue/gray palette. Feels just right for your market.

    Hope this helps.

      Awesome review, voted you.

Thanks for the compliment! I'm making the switch because it simply doesn't make sense to market one person as an agency, It just confuses clients. I have a feeling I'm making the right decision in switching from studio to freelance.

There are two audiences I'm trying to appeal to. Local area small business, and prospect freelance clients (acquired by my local creative talent agent). Unfortunately I can't move the confidentials down as my agent asked I keep them up there since big name clients only care about big name experience.

I'll work on the icons, think I should make them a minimalistic 2 tone?

But is brand design really typically associated with all marketing colateral? I'm having trouble putting a good title up there.

Any chance you can look over my "about me" copy? I'm sure It's filled with general message errors :P

Once again though, big thanks very helpful.

      Yuriy

      Glad to help.

Have to take issue with this Microsoft thing, as others have mentioned also. You have to be clear about who your target audience is, because trying to appeal to multiple markets only serves to confuse. By that I mean, if your primary market is local business owners, they will react poorly to seeing the prominent Microsoft logo. A small business owner automatically assumes that because you're working with "big" clients, you will be a. too expensive; b. too busy; c. too uncaring about the uniqueness of his business. And once he has made up his mind about you (in one glance) nothing you do or say will make him change it. You've lost him as a prospect forever.

But if your primary target audience is freelance work for other studios as a subcontractor, then you leave Microsoft in a prominent position and completely change the text content of the site. Because right now it speaks eloquently to business owners and not at all to studio owners (hirers).

You can't have it both ways. It's basic market positioning. You must choose one or the other. Or you create a new site altogether for the second market. It has the same portfolio but completely different layout and copy.

      1. Having said all that, here's a quick massage of your copy designed to cross both markets.

Phenomenal! Extremely appreciate the time you put into that!

My main concern right now is that I get subcontractor design work when I really think about it, does that change anything? I've been under the impression lately that talk is cheap, so I'd rather have prospects look through my work and have short but sweet copy. Thoughts?

    a bit too strict...

Posted on Jul 09, 2010 at 8:41 PM

It looks very corporate, which is good if this is the intended goal. I'm not sure the 3 icons fit very well. In my opinion the notepad icon doesn't make sense for "Web Design". Perhaps you could put a palette icon there.

Another possible weakness is that the Microsoft logo is too dominating. It is the first thing that attracts my attention, and it overshadows your own logo

But I like it on the whole, it is clean and stylish.

    I like the design

it's nice but the interaction has some problem, I didn't get that you can click on the 3 titles "interactive media" "graphic design" and "internet marketing", I discovered that by mistake. Make them more like buttons and put a link to the projects so that your users can visit the websites in your portofolio.
