At the moment looks like some whitespace could make the design feel a little bit lighter, although cant say that for sure with Lipsum text placeholders.
Header seems to be umm... quite empty/plain, i suggest trying to add more detail up there, at the moment (at least for me) it seems like header is lost somewhere outsite the pic.
I like those pictures in content area.
Hi. I appreciate what you are trying to do by making it look like a newsletter or print design.
However, just like print, you need to consider some things.
First, take a look at some magazines for your demographic.
Then take a look at websites for the major newspapers such as NY Times.
The "page" has no focal point. Most elements are carrying a similar weight.
It's difficult to know where to start reading. At the top most text or the left most text.
Ad a drop cap.
Ad a pull quote for contrast of text.
If you are going to make it look like a magazine, you need to apply magazine style design elements.
I hope my comments help.
Rob
Hi Rob,
Thanks for the drop cap tip.
I was hoping the focal point lay on the black square in the middle.
Whenever you mouse moves over the images a kind of pull quote appears. I think I am going to place more focus on the menu items, so visitors can navigate easier. The idea was to motivate the visitor to click on the images to navigate further, but I think that is too much of usability a risk.
agree about magazine style elements. Remember that magazines are very, very heavily column-ized.
Be sure to look at hair style magazines. Lots of them. Go to a few salons and take a look at the magazines in the waiting areas. You will definitelly be inspired.
Rob
First, the site to me looks like a fashion magazine more than a hair salon. I know you said you want to get a magazine look to it, but you don't want the audience to think your site is for something that it's not either. The header is a little awkward as is right now. I see what you're trying to do with the magazine feel but it doesn't really work right now as is.
I find it interesting that you use the words "with an edge" in your description, because the major problem in your design is it's lack of edges. It is very difficult to determine what is supposed to go with what. Is all the text on this page one article? Personally, I see 11 different items on the page, none of which are related. At the same time it kind of looks like they should be related. Maybe the black box text and the picture of the girl in the flowers? It's very difficult to parse through the content of this.
If all the content is supposed to be one big piece of the same puzzle, then you can pretty much ignore my tips below, but you need to still work on reorganizing significantly to reflect that. If it is supposed to be multiple items as I have interpreted, here are some suggestions on how to improve your readability and usability:
1) Use some sort of grid. You have a very grid-like appearance, but it doesn't seem to be following much of a grid layout. Keep content organized by columns and rows. You have a lot of overlap that will confuse the reader.
2) Add more white space. White space is THE best way to separate content, especially in a content-heavy page. It adds logical divisions that aren't distracting.
3) Typography! Every item of text on this page is the same size, style and font, with the exception of the bold NR78 and the underlined "lees meer."
I would never guess that this site is for a hair saloon. This must be clear no matter which style you pursue - visitors arriving at the page must immediately know that this is a hair saloon. Browse existing saloon website and see which common characteristics they share. A newspaper layout might not work after all...
Second, the text sections must have clear titles so they content can be scanned - few will read the text to learn what it is.
I have other comments, but I believe the first one should be addressed before further feedback will be helpful.
Good luck
The images are great imagery to begin with, but they would get old and repetitive without changing.
Just imagery overload for my non-artist brain.
I think the big problem is there is no call to action on the page.
I like the structure of the page, but the content needs to be more structured.
