    Spice it up!

Hi Jake. I can call you Jake right? Since we are now on a friend to friend basis, I'm going to tell you a little secret and critique this design.

I will try to keep this simple, See the notes after carefully reading this.

    HOME PAGE

    1. Logo: tsk tsk tsk, I'm so sorry, but im afraid the JTD wont do. It looks to me like its slightly beveled, and the only thing on your site that is Beveled, I would design a logo and Use that.(see my Note #1 for a some ideas to get you started.)
    2. The subtext, below your "logo" the font doesnt fit at all with the design. and personally, I dont really think you need it.
    3. "Hello there" I'm not sure what you should do with it. If you are going to keep it I would keep it consistant and dont change the font for your name.
    4. Portfolio: I would keep the images the same size. It looks off because they are all different heights and widths. Also, keep them the same overall width of the rest of your site, They look really off balanced, Like they are hanging there.
    5. My services: Fine, i guess. I would "Spice it up" with a fancy graphic (table or grid thingy) That makes it more interesting to read. NO ONE likes to read blocks of text, If it was possible, I would totally just love to absorb information Instead of reading it... So make it simple and FUN! :D
    6. My writing. keep that on the same line as my services... and keep the text size the same, The SERVICES TEXT looks bigger than the "BLOG TEXT"

Whats the footer for? Or is it just one of those interesting grey/gray bars to stare at.

    JOURNAL
That looks fine to me, I would add some sort of sidebar or something, since its like this big gap. most people are used to having sidebars on blogs, Its almost like pants now, The content is the shirt, the sidebar is the pants. and its weird to talk to your friend when they are not wearing pants.

    PORTFOLIO
    This is the biggest problem.

    1. Align the text to the right, Having some stuff centred and other stuff to the left looks WEIRD.
    2. Un-center the WORK CLIENTS and PROJECTS
    3. Float everything in the sidebar to the left basically..
    4. the FEATURED WORK and OTHER PROJECTS text should be placed off to the left as well.

    EXTRA STUFF
I would add some interest with the colors, gradients, and borders. Its very plane right now. Thats why its only one star for engagement.

Keep stuff consistant, I see drop shadows on some things, not on others, weird text sizes, and other things like that.

I'm not putting Notes.. :) too lazy SOOOO I will do FAKE NOTES

Note 1::: Think of something that you like for a logo. When i was but a young child.. Like.. 5 years ago. I LOVED birds. I was obsessed. I still like birds now. I have a cockatiel (Ace :) My logo is a feathery thing.. which ties that in

    Be creative..

    Thats about it!

Luke, thanks for all of the excellent feedback. Very useful stuff. I'm definitely not a logo designer, so I'll definitely be working on that for the foreseeable future...

It's really interesting to see how people interpret a layout. there isn't a single line of centered text on the page. on the portfolio page, the work/clients/projects are all aligned on the second grid, which is inline with the logo and nav. the other test is on grid 1, similar to how the images on the homepage work. the concept was to create horizontal tension, an idea stolen from elliot jay stocks. I definitely need to work on it to make it fit.

I mostly agree that the design is plain. It's supposed to be clean/minimalist. I'm definitely going to add a radial gradient to the header. the body has a texture, which might be hard to get from the screenshots.

anyway, I'll work on it and post back another iteration when it's ready. Many thanks for all of the great feedback!
