Hi Molnar,
This design is just okay.....if your gonna sell yourself as a designer you need to do something with your site that give potential clients the confidence to hire you. The design at the moment is not original enough and doesn't show off you creativity. The wooden panel background is getting a little cliched now.
I like the layout and the simplicity of the design but focus more on your graphic design and I think that you'll be on to a winner.
Hope this helps.
Hi Molar, based on your goals for this site here is what I think will make it better:
New Background. The wood texture is not working, especially when combined with the low opacity black layer you have over it. I would suggest finding a texture that best suits your layout, if you want to keep a texture as your background.
Remove the color pencil containers. It seems pointless, out of place and your design would benefit from you removing it.
Find your focus. At first glance, it is hard to find where you want to find your visitors to focus their attention, which can be hard for dark web designs. You should follow this link to get some good inspiration by looking at other dark web designs.
Look into what it takes to make a strong portfolio. From what you mentioned you want to have a really strong portfolio site, but to do that you have to know what makes a portfolio site strong. Smashing magazine has a great article on 10 steps to the perfect portfolio. You can also find other good articles related to this.
Better color scheme. Your current scheme does not have enough cta to draw in attention from your visitors. Color scheme designer and adobe kuler are great resources to help you with this.
Work on your layout. The single page concept is cool, but the way you present your information needs some reconsidering. I get a cramped feeling from your design. Try adding some white space, this will give it a more professional feel and make it easier on your site viewers.
Overall your site shows promise and if you take your time, not rush and cater to every detail it could be great. I will be interested in seeing how you progress with your portfolio.
Probably I'm going to rethink my all portfolio site.
Thanks for the detailed review! :)
Molnar- here is what i think you can work on (IMO):
my personal site i have also used the page sliding kind of effect - something similar to what u have- you can take a look at http://www.akumar.com
I feel too, that the photo is not the right one, but I can't put in words why is that. Can you tell me what is wrong with it? Or Why doesn't fit on the page?
Probably I will keep this one-page-layout style..but I will redesign the all page.
Thanks for your review! :)
hey-
the issue with the photograph- there was something which did not 'feel' right.. let me try explaining that- may be it was the gesture- a bit uncomfortable gesture- not very natural.. that's what i think. The other thing is, if you are a web designer- it does not mean that the photograph u choose should be the one where you are working on a laptop- it could also be you simply playing a guitar, i mean you on a laptop and then saying i do web development is a very obvious and may be that's why it didn't 'feel' right.
And one more reason could be, when you say 'Hello!!' on your page and insert an image- get a photograph facing users, eye to eye contact- and say hello.
so in one word, put a bit more natural picture of yours- kill the laptop and interact with users.
hope it helps.
Overall, I really like this portfolio design. As others have mentioned, it may not be the most unique style, but I still like it a lot. It's not distracting from the content, which is a big plus.
The one thing that bothers me is the main image. I like it, but the colored part of it doesn't match. I think I see what you were going for, but it just feels slightly out of place. A different image may be better.
I LOVE how you did your portfolio section. Very sleek and to the point. It's effective.
Until I went to your site and realized that it as a scrolling all-in-one-page design, I was going to say that seeing the double navigation was bothering me (above and below the picture). It seemed too repetitive. However, now I realize how the nav works, I see the point of it and it's not so bad.
Could advise, what kind of image should I put? What kind of style? Or there is a "problem" only with the colored part?
Thanks for feedback! :)
Hello -
How are you.... I would have to agree with the other comments that the wood background doesn't really work. It's a very common background and just doesn't portray creativity. I also do not care for the colored pencils. It looks like they were just thrown in as an after thought. I also think that Portfolio should go before Testimonials. IMO, references are always important, but as a user, I would rather see for myself what talent you have before reading what others may have to say.
Other than that I like your concept, it's very clean. And having the multi-language choice is always a plus. Maybe take advantage of CSS3 and throw in some rounded borders and text shadows for your title tags to give it some extra punch. :-)
Have fun! Rebecca...
Hi, Rebecca!
Probably I'm going to change the order of testimonials and portfolio. Reading your review it sound logical. :)
There are round corners on the page, but maybe it doesn't appear correctly in every browser :-\
Thanks for review, I find it helpful! Thumbs up! :)
I love this layout
The transparency of the panel is perfect for the bg you've used
I like how everything seems to float and the minimal colour scheme gives it a nice minimal professional look and feel
The only comment I would make is that some areas seem a little empty and you could do with maybe framing the introduction text
Good job in my opinion
I don't think there is enough happening on this one. I believe you are going to need a splash of color and a nice logo to start to finish this off.
colors are nice but very much empty space or not managed well
When I was reading your comment I get some good ideas connetcted what you have written. So thanks for review, it was constructive :)
