Hey before I start getting into my rant about structure and form, I have to say...
I love the mood and feel. Gorgeous art and beautifully playful! You've truly have an artistic mind!
Now the bad news, I don't know how you plan to execute this (and I hope you don't say FLASH). I can appreciate the non-linear icons, but you'll have a heck of a time to make it work (image maps? Flash? ) And when you finally accomplish it, it will destroy your SEO value of your site.
Next biggy is that your design is a landscape graphic that would look great in powerpoint or print. But websites are actually portrait layout. People now view websites on iphones and ipads. Even if you look on this website, all the website submissions are portrait.
Again, I first saw your submission here using my artist eyes and I really love it. But through my web designer eyes, it's a nightmare.
Hey.Nice idea and I'd be absurd to say this is not original. I do understand your point of view in going for a more artistic approach but inmho you've reduced the usability a lot. Of course, it's very pleasant for the visitor's eye, but the links are a pain in the a** if you allow me to say this. I'd say to keep the header image which I'd say it's really great and try to organize a more structured and obvious menu. Remember that your website must be used in order for you to become wanted, and all you have till now is a static work of art
it gives me a fresh kind of feeling and tells me that you are an artist- but will NOT work on the web.
Few things:
Fonts: all kinds of fonts used, see your name on top right, your first name and last name- are you using two different fonts?- About me, the way M is designed, it is more "horror" than "paint drop"..
whenever you see a bird on sites these days, either you think of peace or twitter- this is peace i assume. but some might try to click it to see your twitter feed.
Hi Zeynep,
The site is good looking but does have usability issues. The design images are too small and are difficult for the user to engage with.
However, I have to say good job as you have managed to actually implement this. Not sure if the people who have commented have actually been to the site?
Under the "About Me" I'm not sure which images are links and which are not. E.g. Did you design the WWF site[!], are you a volunteer, or do you make donations? What do the butterflies signify? Why is there a cartoon bee?
This site seems to be designed more for yourself than an audience - the lack of structure, purpose, and definition really, really confuses me. As Steve Krug says: you need to make your site like a billboard; the message needs to be clear otherwise people aren't going to read it.
I think I understand that you are trying to go with a visual-only design: if so, clearly define sections, links, etc. Place more of an emphasis on your work; the thumbs are too hard to discern at the moment, so make them bigger - make your work shine and speak for itself. Usability should not have to suffer :)
For the "About Me" section: only place elements there that make sense. If the images do not make sense on their own, then add a short description.
I really love the header. I'd suggest working from that as a base to create the rest of the design. Good luck!
You know what I thought when I first saw this: Vertial scroll bar.
You see it infrequently so it is unique and I think this design would be perfect for it.
Leave your header, it is beautiful. Position it statically.
In the bottom section where you have the (um mess) organize it into the three or four sections (how many are there?)
Sorry but you are going to have to be more linear but you can still stay creative.
Display your work with larger images to expand your full design width and have the about me text on the right with an arrow indicating that you should scroll to see it. Clicking on that could scroll your site vertically across the page or take you to another page (same header)
Basically creating sort of a slideshow with your content.
I agree with the font situation. Your titles need to be in the same font ideally as what is in your header and make them consistent in size.
If you can pull that off I think you will have a professional, beautiful site.
whoa.
I think the header image is nice, but very over sized. All the icons for the links are confusing the way they are placed on the page.
I recommend researching current web design trends and also web standards for your code. You are currently linking to many website examples that are using tables for layout which is a very dated method.
Check out htmldog.com and css-tricks.com for some great css tutorials.
I think you should go with a One Page website. Definately more of an artistic site. So that would be much easier for you.
Here is a layout i made in photoshop(quickly) so illustrate what I think would look best
header part is nicely designed but about the footer or middle part i am not getting what this website is for? keep thinks visible clearly what/ which you want to show.
on a positive note...I love the main image with the dove.
beyond that, everything else just falls to the wayside. I have no idea what this site is about or where I'm supposed to go. I'm sorry, but if I was a visitor to the site, I would leave immediately. You need to give the users a sense of purpose for being on the site.
good luck :-)
