I like... your photography, some really striking images. Also the clean balanced layout.
I don't like... the page lacks purpose, I see it's a landing page with a menu but so what! (I'm not being mean here I just think it's a good question to ask yourself). If the page is to showcase your photographs then I would suggest at least making the static image a sideshow.
notes... It's a more effective web page for Jason Semko photography than it is for Jason Semko web design
I like the color pic. It is great, especially considering your line of work. The change I would consider making is to the navigation and name placement. When I first saw it, I totally missed the navigation at the bottom. I would recommend moving your navigation to the top in the black border above the image. Text color: white and larger. Then move your name and subtitle to the right. Reduce the size of your name as well. I love that pic.
On my 13", high is perfect. What's the difference beetwin 'web' and 'blog' ?
I cant tell you how many photographers portfolios i've seen online. And while I think that its a clean and usable layout; you have to differentiate yourself from the rest. Take a look @ http://www.now-eternity.com/ some friends of mine.. its nothing spectacular.. but I think you could quickly make your page stand out with a touch of color and type formatting.
FWIW--- your example of site now-eternity.com --site load time is atrocious ! that site quickly stood out as being too long to load, so I left.
very nice
I don't think that this is that original, but that doesn't mean that I think it is not good. I like the design of the site. I would improve the design by making the black footer and navigation bars semi-transparent.
The main thing that I would change would be the use of typography. Think about using @font-face.
Hey,
if it's simple you wanted ...simple you got. The navigation is visible the colors are missing so no problem there..can't go wrong with black... and your name on top very visible.
Great.
Regards, MEster.
You said " I don't like overloading the user when they first arrive, but rather leave some mystery and hopefully with my photography, get them a little 'at peace'/'invested'." You don't want web site visitors, you want customers.
You don't get very much time to engage someone who gets to your web site. Engage them with some copy that will assure them that they arrived at the right web site. Then they will spend the time to investigate further. As it is now, a visitor will need to determine if they want a web site with photography to fill their need.
It's like someone who has a headache is told to take a pill for it. He goes to the medicine cabinet and sees bottles with pills. If he doesn't know that aspirin will help the headache he may not take it.
Need change in typography. For a web design with photography can have simple and pleasant graphics elements.
Need more design work to improve your site.
All the best, expecting early revision..!
Nice work. Immediately clear what your doing, simple design.
Like it
Hi Jason,
As soon as i saw the thumbnail, i thought "Photography site", i guessed correctly, the photo is amazing and i love have you have kept the photo clear of text, drawing the users eye.
The one thing i have a problem with is the text is too boring, i would rather something like handwriting or more stylized like that.
Awesome photography and simple layout. I would definitely check out some free font websites. Use a similar sans serif font, but not the system default.
See attachment for an example.
Also, I visited the website.. I would make it full screen. All that white makes an awkward border.
When I first looked at this site I thought it was a photoblog/photographers website.
It's a nice image but I find the page lacking in information that would make me want to click anywhere else. Does the picture change if I click it?
I like the font for your name.
Hi Jason,
I like how do you want to position yourself and think it's look good to me, however, I think you can choose the images which can depict your personality, your work etc... If your try your own style, flavor in this design then it will become unique. Also, navigation doesn't seem working below the photo.
I like your concept, but it needs more work.
I like the large image portfolio's but i just feel you need to do more with the fonts on your text, and possibly add a little colour.
Uour menu should also be at the top, bottom is really bad for design.
Nice concept, if slightly overused in the photographic community.
As others have mentioned, the navigation has got to be moved to the top of the page, with regards to accessibility and SEO puposes the navigation should be at or near the top of the html, obviously the use of some creative CSS can get the viewed navigation to appear at the bottom, but there are also numerous design and usablity reasons to have the navigation at the top of the page. I would suggest moving it to within the black bar above the main image and changing the text colour to a white shade.
I am not sure at which stage these concept are at but there is a certain lack of textual content within the page with regards to a description of what the image is. Maybe overlay a transparent box in the top right corner with the project details. If you decide not to include this item then make sure that the image ALT value has a good description of what the image is.
Hi Jason Nice base... I would think about a bit of an over haul.
The text seems very heavy for a photography portfolio. The plain white backgorund seems empty. I know you are probably looking for a minimal look but maybe try an work something here.
I personally prefer the look of the colour image, but then that depends entirely on your work.

good luck Jason Try playing around a bit with the layout, check out some of the competition and see what they're up to.
Hi Jason,
naturally, the images you chose to display really catch the eye of the visitor and that's of course what you were going for, this being a photographer's portfolio. The problem for me was that once my eye strayed away from the picture, i saw a menu that was disproportionately less elegant than the photos i was looking at earlier.
If i were to like one thing changed on your concept it would certianly be the typography of your menu. Slender letters come to mind, and maybe a lighter shade of a dark colour.
your colour version is best. very striking. your font seems too heavy for my liking - perhaps tone it down on navigation. good to see you fixed the indentation on version 3 - looks better.
Thanks, the font weight seems to be a consensus here, that's wonderful to know, I will change that.
I can see you have done the indent and are planning on using grids, however you have no specified how wide your grid layout is going to be.
The large image is great, especially as you are a photographer, however as mentioned I can not tell if the image is going to stretch full width across the page or sit inside the page.
If its going to be full width I think that would look really nice, full width header banners are showing up more and more these days and when done right are really effective the black bars would work for this.
If the picture is not going to be full width then I am not sure how well the black bars will work, they do draw the eye to the centre but again its not how it looks standalone but how it looks as your users will view it, ie in a browser.
Look forward to seeing the finish result.
VERY good point, almost all of the comments refer to my page as a 'photography' page...although it's just a start page, where my web design will be an SEO stop page. But GREAT to know how this is being interpreted.
