    Background

Posted on Apr 22, 2010 at 3:26 PM

    Daniel,

Good start! There are a few things that I would change:

    1. I don't like the background with the cartoonish clouds and hills. I think you're idea of changing them is cool, but realize that not everybody is under the same weather conditions as you at that point, and will visitors "get it" when they see it. How does that represent who you are as a designer?

    2. Gradients. I like your use of gradients, but there are too many of them.

    3. Your content area white background starts at the bottom of your header, but ends in mid-space not connecting to anything.

    4. I can't read the text on the bottom for "Last.fm Last Played", "Recent Post", etc.

    5. Too much space under your footer area before your copyright message is displayed. Most people won't scroll down that far.

    6. It would look better if you had a logo for your name.

Thanks for your advice Josh. I will most definitely take all of this into account as I move on to design the next version over the upcoming days. Thank you.

    More appealing fonts.

Posted on Apr 22, 2010 at 4:45 PM

I agree with everything Josh said and would like to add my $0.02 worth.

    1. Not really a fan of the fonts you used for titles ("Who am I and what..."), "Visit Site" button and footer box titles ("Last.fm Last Played", "Twowit-Towoo!"...)

    2. I would suggest chaging those footer titles to white or a light shade of gray, to make them more readable.

    3. (Continued from 2.)Have you tried making title backgrounds fade into the same shade of gray as in the content box bellow?

      Thanks for your suggestions.

Based on what you and Josh have said, I have a simple question.
Personally, I am really keen to keep the background dynamic in relation to the weather. Do you think that this would be better done if I only did the smaller section in the footer? All in regards to the weather not being the same where everyone is, I can work around this with some backend PHP to grab the location of their internet connection.

Your time to provide with feedback on this concept is really is much appreciated

      Thank you, Daniel Groves

It seams like a lot of hassle for something people might not even "get". You can never be certain if it's raining where the visitor is or if it's the sunniest day ever, but one thing you can absolutely be sure of - if it's day or night.

Are you interested in doing that instead of the weather?

That is a fair idea. Will think about that one. I just get bored with all these website that look the same day in day out, I really don't see why more people don't have a bit of fun with design and have it change on the fly.

But, as I said that is a fair idea. Will think about it.

      Thanks,

      Dan.

    Give it some life

Posted on Apr 22, 2010 at 5:05 PM

I like the initial concept but it needs some work and maybe more colour to bring it to life. At the moment it seems a little plain.

There are some nice touches though.

      Robin,

You mention that their are some nice touches to the design. What which bits do you think count as the nice touches? Which bits do you not like?

I like the layout overall, you have done a good job with guiding the user around the site. I alos like the use of handrawn background, it looks organinic and I ike that. The main body of the site is quite a contrast to background and I'm not sure if it works. Also the footer looks a little weird to me the spacing of the element looks a little erratic. It's really difficult to give a comprehensive critique as you have not finished the design yet. I'm really lookin forward to seeing it after the revisions are in place though!

      Hope this helps....

It's a good start I think it just needs some polishing to get it to standard.

      Awesome, thanks for the feedback.

I understand that it is hard for you guys to review something that is still being refined but thanks for your effort.

Needs Color and a Better Approach to Layout

Posted on Apr 23, 2010 at 12:03 AM

Some things have been written - and I think these points need to be addressed even in the new concept posted:

    1. Color - Color isn't a necessary ingredient in any design and there are a huge number of popular sites out there that are all grayscale and black. However, this site just seems so vanilla. Some color accents across the layout - especially the portfolio section (consistent use throughout of course) would make it a lot better and will focus the viewer's attention. As of now, I really can't make up my mind on what should I be looking at first.

    2. The Background needs work. Where the design otherwise is all straight lines, the cartoonish background doesn't quite gel with the design.

    3. Fonts - What's with the title fonts? I mean just doesn't go with the design in any manner. The design is all straight lines and the serifs don't quite go with the design.

    4. Contrast - Aside from color, I believe what's lacking is the element of contrast. Could be because of the lack of color, or even just the variation in gray tones to create some impact. Everything looks on the same plane as of now.

    5. Footer - Spacing and element presentation looks way too Web 1.0 for this design. Adjust spacing, positioning of elements, and line-height.

      Harjeet,

Thank you for the detailed suggestions, I really do appreciated your time and effort to do this. I have just updated the concept with a new version with two options for the fonts and quite a few other tweaks. I love to hear your option on it.

      Thank you,

      Dan.

The cartoons at the moment aren't working for me in terms of how they fit with the site. They feel out of place so I think either the rest of the site needs to be made more playful or lose the cartoons.

The rest of the site feels very very corporate and a bit bland at the moment.

The spacing below the Who Am I and what do I do is a bit on the large side for me right now - otherwise maybe make them bigger if you want to keep that kind of space going on.

I'm not keen on the different width tabs on your footer.
