I know that you are trying to portray all the magazines that this particular press company has, but I think it is overwhelming the design. I would get rid of the two magazine covers in the header, extend the header image to the edges of the design and then only put one row of magazines below the header and make a carousel that you can click through to see all of the magazines. Then I think you need to add some sort of feature article of the month below that. Lastly, I think you need to tighten up some of the areas. In some places it feels like you have a lot of unused space. I like your first color scheme the best. Keep working with this design, it will get there.
I do understand that you are trying to sell subscriptions, however I think you can still do that without putting them all over your page. In your header slider image you can display images from the covers then below the header image a row of magazines and then a featured article below them. So everything is still about the magazines but just doesn't display the magazine imagery all over. Does this make sense?
Why don't you just use a content slider? Or something along the lines of Apple's now infamous Coverflow?
@Nate and Michael : see my answer to Andy just above, regarding the slider. Coverflow is not a good idea here : customers ever know the magazines. They don't need to look through to buy (grid)...
If you are sold on keeping the individual magazine covers placed throughout your design, keep them within the content area and don't overlap the header. That is the part that looks the most awkward.
Over all nice work. I'll go for the very first one(deep gray) since this scheme matches well with nature of site.
However you could decrease the gap between the very top and the logo to reduce the amount of scrolling.
Also Text under white content area should be more readable.

Personally I like the blue concepts of the bunch. The contrast is not as jarring when scanning the full page. What I do find odd is the amount of space that is above the logo. Is this spot reserved for some ads or something?
If I may ask what is the target demographic? That may sway my vote a little more as coming in a close second is the deep gray/black composition. The black seems to let the meta information and logo to pop more as the blue allows the content and thumbnails to pop.
All in all I like the concepts but as you point out the colors do change the interpretation.
Ok after further review of the concept (sorry I am new), I noticed you provided the demographic. In that case my vote goes with the deep gray/black version. Because the contrast and rigidness of the color and pop of elements.

Actually, I don't remember having see news stands when I've been visiting NYC last summer, but in France, above all in Paris, there are plenty. I can easily understand why the slider as a place to sell when a magazine has been chosen could be unsettling (things are different in other countries, as USA for example)...
The black fits well with what you want to accomplish but the header is a bit crowded. I do not think those three magazines should be up there it makes the header too confusing. Maybe you can relocate the three and expand the white box in the header(Slider?)

That's right, this design has been inspired from an other one. But there was a real work on the concept, target, and colors. It's not just a "picked and arranged" one.
It's a tough one to design.
You need to show the breadth of their title range but without overwhelming the user with too many options.
Magazines are generally always offering special offers and free gifts with their magazine subscriptions so maybe you could have a large rotating banner with each magazine in turn and their subscription offer they're offering at that time as it's a big enticement to sign up and subscribe.
Then I'd think about adding a search facility in a prominent area maybe in a tab-top menu where users can search by 1. Magazine Category, 2. Price, 3. Offers. 4. Free Gifts.
Maybe then it would be worth finding out what the circulation figures are for each title and ordering them in order of circulation as the most popular are going to be the ones users are mostly likely to be looking to subscribe to.
In terms of colours - how about a look at browny/greys - something warmer but still neutral.

It's not only a subscription service to one or many magazines. It's a general delivery service but that's right, I never explained it here. The search facility is an usability focus, and you're right to pick it out. However, my client would only sell these 15 magazines for the 2 next years. The only things that will change will be the covers themselves.
In term of colors, it has been puzzling, but you're right again. Warmer, browny were my 1st choice. But my client didn't want it, and wondered if it would "speak" only to retired people. He was right. That's why we had to choose some tonic colors to speak to active people and families first.

First off I'd like to say that I really like this design, in particular the black design.
The overflow from the header looks a little weird but I guess it may just take some getting used to. The dropshadow and border on the covers looks nice!
The form in the footer is well designed but perhaps couls have a little more contrast to draw some more attention to it. It blends in a bit too much for my taste.
I'd have to also agree with some of the other comments. It looks a little busy at the moment. I think that you should find a way to categorise the magazines. By doing this you can cut down on the content per page.
I know your not keen but by utilising a slide tool you could scroll through the magazines by category. Keep things grouped to target your market easier.
For example a guy who's into health and fitness may not want to see Glamour Magazine when he is browsing. Although this design reflects a magazine stand it does not need to act like the real thing. The point is it's virtual so make the most of the features and don't be constrained by the status quo.

I think the grey one feel too bland, and I must agree with you on the blue version, it does feel too ocean.
I like the layout and the choice of colours on the black one, but if I were you I would add some more contrast in the input fields as opposed to the background on the contact form as they blend in a little too well at the moment.
I really do think your black scheme will be fine for your target audience.
My rating are all for the black one.

I love it...for me the first version shines through as something I would want to visit and use. The black seems a lot stronger that the other 2 options, almost as if the other 2 were slighty faded. I like the rigid grid system it uses, it manages to look like a real magazine type layout without feeling cluttered like many of the "magazine style" blogs that are around.
All i can say is lovely work, attention to detail, pixel perfect line work, nice use of shadows.

I think the layout is almost there. The idea to showcase a bunch of the magazine covers is good. I also like the bottom shadows under each thumbnail. However, I think you could use a headline and/or introduction to explain that this is a virtual magazine stand and describe how someone would purchase one or a subscription. I prefer the teal version and don't think it gives an ocean or sea feel. Good job.

I totally forgot to mention that, thanks for the reminder ;) In fact, the grey rectangle at the top is a slide where service will be explained. Likewise, when the user will click on a magazine, slide will be replaced by a little description of what is inside the magazine and how much it will cost. These UX choices were made to keep it simple and refined.

And thank you for your feedback. I think you misunderstanding the concept of this website. The visual concept is to be likewise a street news stand where at you buy magazines on your way, not a showcase of the magazines owned by the company. That's why you have 2 magazines covers in the header. Main objective is to sell subscriptions to an upper spc, and that target explain the spacing too. I remember your idea of the article of the month even if I think it won't please my client's objectives.
