Work on the Hierarchy of information

Posted on Apr 18, 2010 at 2:13 PM

Overall it is a nice clean design, but it is almost "over-balanced." Beyond the large masthead everything has the same level of visual weight which overall gives the design the "dull" feeling that you are describing.

If the three columns are really "equally" important (which is what one would assume based on the visual hierarchy) then maybe you want to draw more attention to them than the lower sections through larger or reversed out headlines, or some other graphic treatment (background color, shape, gradient, etc...)

      Thanks a lot Ross!

Thanks a lot with the hint! I didn't looked at it from this angle. I will try to build some hierarchy there.

      Thank you!

I have applied some changes - what do you think?

I think that is a huge improvement. I wouldn't agree that there is too much content (as mentioned in a review below), there are plenty of sites that have a lot of content that don't feel overwhelming.

Using a bit more whitespace will help give the design some breathing room (space between the sections, area between headers and content, etc...) This design is a good example -> http://cameronmoll.com/projects/lds/home2a.html

The new headlines look great. I would de-emphasize the right hand column a little bit more to further illustrate the primary vs secondary areas of the site.

      Hope this helps!

    definitely missing a colour

i'm a big fan of clean grid layouts, and this one is pretty good. but i see your point about the "dullness".

you might want to play with the column headings and make them heavier by choosing a warm (maybe the orange) background instead of the bottom border. another thing- the quote/testimonial box seems to be a bit under designed.

    Accent colour

This is a strong deign. Function and attractive, you really don't need to change much. If yuo really want to change something to bring it to life then try adding another accent colour like orange to make it less plain.

You could use the orange on links hover and active etc.

    Very nice start

Posted on Apr 18, 2010 at 6:57 PM

i think this is a great start, but just has WAY too much content. I know it's some times hard to balance what users need to see and what they don't, however this is pretty overwhelming. Even though it's a nice design, I think I would be pretty turned off. Good start though!

It seems that the only thing you have changed is adding a yellow background to the header. I think this actually makes the design busier. I think you still need to simplify the content. Keep at it.
