Hey Euan, i liked the general website layout. I think you should use more the white space, things are too close to each other and some texts are confusing because of the small line height.
If you want users to sign up you should make the register button more visible, maybe moving it to the top of the sidebar.
The twitter and mailchimp banners are too big and too empty at the same time, maybe you could make them smaller and use some eye catching colors.
You have the latest news on your sidebar, there I can see 5 quick links to them, but on the main content area i see the same 5 news. You could use the sidebar space or the main content space for something important like the sign up.
Really liked the icons on the menu, but as I said before the buttons are too close to each other.
The gray background make things look even more confusing, maybe you should use more white on your layout as long as you have a lot of content.
Hope that my opinion helps, sorry for my bad english.
This is far too bland and simple and lacks any sort of engagement. Here is what I don't like:
Unfortunately I think you are going to need to redo this.
Thank you for taking time to review my site. I know I've got a fair amount of work to do and I'll now begin making some changes. Your comments are much appreciated and I will take them on board when reworking the design. Thank you.
There is Way way too much text on the page. You need less text and more web 3.0 boxes with brief text. Your latest news should be in say 2 column blocks, and much narrower. You need a more catching logo, and a better header. Take for a quick instance, Priceline.com. The 3 boxes for the bid nows are quick and to the point. An image, limited text, and an action.

Hi Euan,
I'm sorry to ask this question but has anyone signed up to your site? I just can't imagine people doing it.
site doesn't look professional from a design point of view and from usability also.
site is cluttered with a lot of information in small boxed and with big graphical boxes creaming for attention.
Do people really will come to your site to read air transport news?
Cut down on 'happy talk' :) The fist paragraph could be summarized by: 'Community educating on how to upgrade to First Class for free' Join us (or similar)
Try to put more relevant information on the homepage like exerpts from your articles, blog posts etc.
Keep improving :)
Michael,
Thanks for taking time to review my design. Yes, a small number of signed up in the week and a bit it's been online.
I appreciate the homepage in particular needs a lot of work and the comments here have given me a lot of good ideas which I'll be working on over the next week or so. I'd love to do it quicker but I only do it in my spare time which has been minimal recently as I've been busy at work (which is nothing to do with website design, etc!).
However, I'll post again my next 'concept' once I get it worked up and hopefully I can improve.
Thanks again. Euan
