    the logo

Posted on Apr 12, 2010 at 2:13 PM

It looks nice. some points I have:

the boxes on the homepage showing "Twitter" "Gift Ideas" etc, the text is a little lost by the vivid colour. Try adding a text-shadow to text to make it stand out a little.

The logo, not sure why the house is so small compared to the rest. It looks strange because "things at home"text feels very detached from it and so the house is lost.

    Great patterns and details

I think that the logo looks a little funny. It is definitely too hard to make out. The colors and the patterns are definitely the strength of this design. I am not a big fan of the header. Why is the search box so big?

    Getting busy

Posted on Apr 12, 2010 at 10:01 PM

This design is good but it's getting pretty busy and cluttered. I think you need to cut down on some of the illustrations, dividers, colors and background textures. I also think you need to figure out a different way to do the tiered navigation.

    leaky sides?

Posted on Apr 12, 2010 at 10:34 PM

The sides (because they don't have a consistent end) could be a bit leaky. And then the footer is very contained, so I would maybe change that. Or use the background in the background and a solid colour for most of the text? that would be a big change but it could be quite a bit more calming.

I would also suggest that the styling of the navigation be more similar to the styling of the box that appears. Like use the same colours from the rollover. I was initially like 'what on earth is that box" before it dawned on me that it's subnav. I do like that then it's not just a list and gives the visitor some more guidance, but it's a break from convention which is a bit confusing.

Also the alignment with the ... sort of minor elements is pretty random. What are Questions * Contact Us aligned with? They don't LOOK center aligned.

Also I think the banner, which I assume is a javascript thing, needs some controls so if I scroll past something I want to buy, I can get back to it.

And I think you might want to move twitter to the end of that list. that's just going to take people OUT of the immediate buying cycle.

    Usability issues

Posted on Apr 13, 2010 at 3:48 PM

Hi Miles, let me tell you that you site looks nice. Very girly but this is your market, isn't it.

    Few usability issues:

    1. Site seems to be cluttered with too many boxes 'screaming' for attention. Your products are very colourful, background is like a wallpaper, fonts are vivid and boxes are colourful. Probably because of all this you had to make huge and colourful 'add to basket' buttons so they don't blend in.

    2. "Menu" is a nightmare (see screenshot) Not only it's on a 'mouse over' but with en extra tooltip covering menu. Menu is reacting instantly to a passing mouse but with a significant delay so it's not unusual to see 3 menus in the same time and all triggered by mistake.

    3. Making search BIG will not force people to use it. You can cut it in half. It is position that matters and yours is good. BTW people do not use it because they are browsing through your site to see what you have. They don't come to your site and think: "I want to see all carrot peeler gadgets" :)

    4. Product slideshow express is killing me :) I'm not a slow reader but before I manage to look at a product and read 2 words of it's name the photo is gone :) It would be much better to have slide bar with arrows so people can scroll products if they want to. Or at least make it 5 times slower. Right now it's difficult to read things on the homepage because moving box distracts so much.

    5. Why is 'add to basket' button redirecting to a basket instead of just adding a product there and showing this product in 'Your basket' preview? Just imagine putting a product into a basket in Tesco and being instantly teleported to the checkout?

    6. Checkout process should indicate to user on what step of the process he is. Otherwise he will feel confused. I had also a problem with coming back from checkout to the shop because there is no link back.

    7. Social media icons are taking real-estate because nobody will use them (believe me) so you can move them to footer.

    8. I don't understand 'Our other customers bought' boxes on the homepage. There is no context in which you offer this information. You could use it in reference to a specific product on it's page.

    Keep working. Cheers.
