One thing...headlines, you could make them stand out more.

    top stories

Top stories could be more distinguished (especially header) and maybe menu expanded to the full width? Or menu aligned to the left with RSS/Twitter on the right side?

Some motto, slogan would be useful

Hi Adam, thanks for the feedback. The plan is to have an animated menu rotation, so I think that should take care of distinguishing the main header 'Top Stories'.

The slogan idea is gold, I totally overlooked including one - thanks for the tip.

    Maybe too much?

    1. I'm torn on this piece because I really like the background image, but I think it might be putting this over the top with color and slightly cheesy patriotic imagery. I wonder if you darken the blue to a much more rich blue if you would have the same problem.
    2. Navigation is a little plain. I think you could make it more detailed and appealing.
    3. The header image and top stories section really needs to stand off the page more. It needs to pull people in and make them want to read it. Try to separate the header from the content area more.
    4. Overall you need more padding. Everything just feels pretty squished.

Great start, keep working on this piece though.

Thank-you for the detailed review. I've eased up a bit by selectively saturating certain areas of the background, particularly the main blue background. Added more detail to the navigation. Working on distinguishing the top stories section. And added more padding. All good points.

    Headlines

A good news website has a very easy and "popping" headlines, I like the background.

I've increased the size of the main headline font - this makes a big difference, thanks. Not sure about the headlines going down the the left hand side - I think I'll just space things a bit more to help them achieve that 'popping' effect.

    Background looks great, really works.

But the headlines and images rotator needs work, for me it doesn't seem to call your attention enough, especially the headlines. You could maybe switch them round, that way the text doesn't blend in so much with the articles below it?

I would also work on the navigation, its a bit plain, and im not a huge fan of it right aligned.

Other that that the site is layed out fairly well.
